Where is ?

is located in Ashby, one of many river islands that are featured along the Clarence River - its serene location on tranquil property makes it the perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of bigger towns and cities in and around the area. Ashby is approximately 3 hours from Brisbane's central business district - it's far enough that it'll be more 'special' than the same old trips up to the Sunshine Coast or down to the Gold Coast, yet not so far that the driving distance will put you off going. Many of Ashby's neighbouring towns are also well worth a visit, including Maclean, 'The Scottish Town', and Yamba, a coastal town with a relaxed and fun beach vibe. There's lots to see and do in the area.

How was your overall experience of ?

From when I first booked my stay to when I was leaving the property, I had nothing but positive experiences. A quick look at the visitor book during your stay and you will find nothing but similar stories of happy travellers and guests! When I was first browsing for pet friendly places to stay in the area, I called up to see what they meant by 'pet friendly' like I usually did before booking accommodation. To my surprise, I was told that not only were pets allowed to stay inside the room with the guest, there was also no surcharge involved. I loved Squeakygate already!

When I first arrived, I was greeted warmly by the hosts Lance and Cheryl, and their two friendly rescue Staffies, Zac and Zoe. Eddy and I were made welcome from the get-go - we were even given two freshly baked muffins that Cheryl had made earlier. Both Lance and Cheryl took time out of their day to make the guests feel at home, and also to make conversation including their knowledge of the local area. While we're on the topic, if you're looking for a scenic back route to your next destination to avoid congested highways and never-ending roadworks, feel free to chat with Lance, who has extensive knowledge of the area. We took the "road less travelled" down to Nambucca Heads, and thoroughly enjoyed cruising through winding country roads flanked by lush green trees - who wants to sit in traffic when on holiday, right?

What was your room like at ?

There are three different types of rooms available at , to suit all types of travellers. Travelling alone? The Standard Room is the perfect size. Looking for something more luxurious to spoil yourself while you're away? The Posh Room may be what you're looking for. And if you're travelling with a family? Not to worry, because there's a Family Unit available too!

Eddy and I stayed in the Standard Room and found it the perfect size room for just the two of us. In addition to a large bed, luggage storage area, and an ensuite toilet and shower, the Standard Room also opened up to a magical looking deck, artistically littered with a seemingly endless number of plants. But the best thing about the deck was not the decor per se, but rather the serene view that accompanies it - you'll be able to take in beautiful panoramic views of the Clarence river from the comfort of the place you'll be calling home during your visit. Here, the world is literally at your feet.

What facilities are available in the common area at ?

The common areas at has all the facilities a visitor would want, including:

  • A large dining area
  • Coffee and tea making facilities
  • Refrigerator (with fresh milk and cold water)
  • Microwave
  • Huge collection of DVDs
  • Equally huge collection of books
  • And even a giant glass bowl full of chocolate and lollies!

  • What was the rest of the property like at ?

The property itself is a beautiful garden oasis, with green on green on green - immerse yourself in all that Mother Nature has to offer, without having to leave the property! Amongst the wide variety of plants that can be seen here at Squeakygate are those that bear fruit - how many different kinds can you spot? There are also lots of wildlife around, including beautiful, vibrant coloured butterflies. And don't forget to say 'hi' to the resident chooks!

What services are offered at ?

A free continental breakfast is provided, unless you would prefer a cooked one. You can even dine in for dinner too, provided you let Lance and Cheryl know with a bit of notice. Squeakygate is also fully licensed, so feel free to enjoy a beverage or two, accompanied by a great view, without worrying about the drive back to your accommodation! There are also heaps of informative brochures and maps to help guide your visit to the Clarence Valley. Oh, and perhaps best of all? Free and reliable wifi!

Thanks Lance, Cheryl, Zac and Zoie for having us - Eddy and I had the best time here at Squeakygate! We can't wait to stay again the next time we're in the area.
