A Melbourne girl at heart, I'm always looking for new adventures...
Published May 28th 2012
You're on the road, out and about and you're getting hungry. You're a busy person, you can't stop for long. You want something healthy, something satisfying, something that will keep you full... Where do you go?

Spud Bar

Hidden amongst the quirky shops of Brunswick St, Spud Bar is a tasty, healthy, filling takeaway option for those who want to try something different and are not afraid of vegetables.

Basically, for whatever you choose, the base is a potato (either regular or sweet) with a range of toppings. You can choose to make up your own creation from the selection available.

For those who are not sure what to have they have a fabulous range to choose from. You have to have a little faith as some of the combinations sound quite strange, but trust me they are very tasty.

So the potato is the base. It is cut up and your toppings are added. I must point out that when you order takeaway everything is just sort of slapped together into a box, but after mixing it all up I promise you it is a real treat.

Having never been before I wasn't sure what to choose. I went with a safe option, something from their range: Chicken and Chorizo.

What I got was a nearly exploding box full of food. Potato on the bottom, melted cheese, hot chicken and chorizo sauce, topped with cabbage, beetroot, corn, sour cream and chives. I have to admit I would not have thought to put those ingredients together. Let me tell you I'm glad I did, it was wonderful. Once it was all mixed together it was mouth-watering.

You can choose to eat in or have it takeaway. The place itself is quite small. It only has a few tables for two. Since the door is always being opened and closed, it can also get quite cold inside. Also parking can be a little difficult at times, but don't let that stop you.

There are more franchises popping up all over the place, so if Fitzroy is too hard to get to you don't have to miss out. They have stores in St Kilda, Doncaster, Hawthorn, South Yarra, Richmond, Little Bourke St, Chevron and Watergardens.

I just hope they open one closer to me…
