– a whimsical combination of 'spro' (barista shorthand for espresso) and 'yolo' (you only live once). It's a cute name, and one that is almost matched by the unconventional café it represents.

Located on Canning Highway in South Perth, the first thing you need to know about is that it has its own carpark next door, so any concerns about street parking on busy Canning Highway can be pushed aside.

isn't much to look at. It has a plain glassed front, inside the visual highlights are some very on-trend oversized naked light bulbs that hang over the central communal table. There is also a couch or two inside the front windows, plus an assortment of simple wooden tables and metal chairs. To be honest, it's not the most comfy café around, with high bar stools around the communal table worthy of some serious leg-dangling, and some backless stools at various tables.

A burst of colour comes from the kids' corner in the back – a chalkboard for the kids to scribble on, plus an assortment of small toys suitable for babies and toddlers, including some wagons and ride-ons that kids can use to free-range around the café (if their parents let them).

is strictly breakfast through to late lunch, closing daily around 3pm (2pm on Sundays) with last orders prior to that. The menu offers a range of all-day breakfast options plus a 'lunch feast' from 10.30am. The coffee has an excellent reputation, coming as it does from the Blacklist coffee roasters which share the same space (you can also bags of coffee beans from the café).

They're so serious about their coffee you can even order a 'tasting flight' of their single origin coffee in various forms (choice of black or white), plus sparkling water as a palate cleanser ($7).

But I was there for the food, and the fact it has a kid-friendly reputation. The menu is relatively small, but it is quite unusual. Yes, you can get eggs on toast (sous vide or scrambled, around $12) but it is their sides and toppings that show isn't simply following the rules. House-made cultured butter (50 cents), sous-vide pork belly (for breakfast!) $6), maple and chai cream cheese ($1.50) and coco melaka caramel ($1.50) which is thoughtfully explained in the glossary as a Malaysian caramel made from coconut and palm sugars.

Then there are the waffles. You can get them with bananas, chocolate sauce and ice cream ($8.50) or a super-pimped version with cherry and raspberry semi-freddo, cherry and coconut crumble, raspberry coulis, and dark chocolate ganache ($14.50) but you can also get some savoury waffles which are pretty curious and unusual.

The PLT ($16.50) is a savoury three-cheese waffle served with slow cooked pork belly, lettuce, tomato and house-made BBQ sauce.

I tried the smoked salmon waffle ($16.50) which was a savoury three-cheese and chive waffle, served with plain cream cheese, a generous serve of smoked salmon, roasted cherry tomatoes, and a little jug of pesto. It was very filling and while the waffle on its own was a bit dry, when combined with the other ingredients it made for a very interesting meal.

Other options include a house-baked scone ($6.50) which comes with spreads such as jam, lemon curd or white chocolate mousse, there is also chai-spiced granola with blueberries and toasted sunflower seeds ($13.50), an incredible smelling laksa ($15) and a full Japanese curry with a bunch of sides for $15.

But the menu also has a page dedicated to kids, and while there may not be many options (and some obvious exclusions, such as the fact they do not make milkshakes) it is refreshing to see a pick-and-mix process where parents can select from different elements such as ham and cheese toasted sandwich ($5), a tiny salad of carrot and cucumber sticks and cherry tomato ($1) and yoghurt with poached fruit ($2.50).

With funky 80s music streaming out of the speakers and its eclectic menu, is definitely a little unusual. But it is also very kid-friendly and a great space for friends or family to meet for a coffee while the toddlers amuse themselves.
