There is an exciting movement growing in suburbs all over Australia. It's the
community gardening movement that has seen organic gardens popping up all over Perth, sometimes in the unlikeliest of places.
These are exciting shared spaces where state government controlled land has been turned over to community members who come together for events and education, gardening,
relaxation and friendship.
A glowing & growing example is the
Southern River Community Garden located at the rear of Southern River College on Anaconda Drive in Gosnells. Join in the fun at the Southern River Community Garden's annual
Springfest on Sunday 25 October from 10.30am to 12.30pm. This family event is absolutely FREE, plants & cakes are on sale, and there are many FREE activities including a sausage sizzle, bush tucker tastings, face painting and FREE activities for the kids. Kids can explore the gardens during the traditional scavenger hunt and musicians from Southern River College will entertain the entire family. A Community garden is one of a few places that are truly designed for people of all ages.
Make sure your garden is ready for spring with a FREE soil test, just bring a sample of your soil to the event and the budding eco-scientists from Southern River College will check it out for you. Even if your green thumb has turned black, there is a program and "hands on" activity to revive your inner plant whisperer. It's not only about growing delicious organic produce to share; there are also programs for those who enjoy native gardens and decorative and therapeutic elements.
The southern river community garden is a multi-purpose community hub offering a range of activities including education and training, playgroups, arts and creative activities, preparing and sharing food, community events and celebrations, and social enterprise. The site has undergone a revitalisation with the development of garden beds planted with veggies and fruit trees, pathways, compost area, worm farm and raised garden beds for seniors and people with disability.
Switch your thinking and be inspired to make Perth a sustainable eco-system. Reducing local greenhouse gas emissions, sequestering carbon, and helping the people of our community to live and work in a way that meets their needs without jeopardising future generations.
The Southern River Community garden is a partnership between the City of Gosnells, Southern River College and the community. For more details, please call the City of Gosnells on 9397 3123.
