Floriade's celebration of flower power

With winter fading away and the warmer weather just around the corner, it's time to start planning ways to satisfy your wanderlust. The Canberra region is on the doorstep of a magnificent world of quirky festivals celebrating local produce and culture. From multi-day spectaculars to quaint local parades, here is a run-down on some of the most unique events all easily accessible from Canberra.

Canberra Moon Festival

Canberra's very own Moon Festival (Mid-Autumn Festival) celebrates harvest and reunion in many Asian cultures. The three-day program includes a DJ disco night, community performances, food and drink stalls and family-friendly amusements. From 9 - 11 September 2022.

Floriade Canberra

Canberra's very own expression of flower-power, Floriade runs for 30 days across September and October in 2022. Floriade includes entertainment, food and wine, horticultural workshops, markets, artistic displays and with a focus on flowers, food and gardens. From 17 September to 16 October 2022.

Cootamundra Wattle Time

Head west for a fun family day in Cootamundra. The Wattle Time Fair begins with a parade on Parker Street then continues to Albert Park where you'll find food and market stalls, a best-dressed dog show, treasure hunts, and horse and carriage rides. The day is filled with entertainment and live music and a very family-friendly event. 11am - 5pm on Saturday 17th September 2022

Cowra Sakura Matsuri (Cherry Blossom Festival)

This beautiful event coincides with the blooming of Cowra's cherry blossoms and the festival celebrates the birth of spring. The festival showcases Japanese culture with displays and demonstrations of art, craft and music including Taiko Drummers, martial arts, Sumo, tea ceremonies, and stalls offering a range of products, food and drinks. From 10am - 4pm on 24 September 2022.

Boorowa Irish Woolfest

Celebrating the fine merino wool of Boorowa and the town's Irish links (the town is twinned with Clonoulty in Ireland), this festival is full of Irish dance and music. The thundering hooves you hear aren't the bulls of Pamplona, Boorowa has it's own unique (and less lethal) animals who take to the road. The Running of the Sheep is the highlight of Irish Woolfest but you can also enjoy the blessing of the fleece, food, music, art exhibitions, markets and a street parade as part of this event. 2 October 2022 with fringe events from 29 September.

Griffith Springfest

Ever wanted to wander among huge sculptures made from the humble orange? Griffith Springfest is the place to experience that. The event also incorporates the Griffith Garden Festival with special talks by Costa Georgiadis. You'll find open gardens, food and fun. Running from 9 to 23 October, the full program of events is here.

National Cherry Festival, Young

Celebrating the harvest of the region's famous fruit, Young's Cherry Festival is one of the largest celebrations in the region. With everything from cherry pip spitting and cherry pie eating contests to the crowing of the Cherry King and Queen, cherries are the star of this show. There is a three-day program of events and the festival is held at the height of cherry season so you can visit local farms for a pick-your-own experience, too. 2 - 4 December 2022
