[SECTION]Spring in Perth[/SECTION]

It's hard to get back into the swing of things after a break. Sometimes it helps to just do something you've never done before, or go someplace you've never been. Winter is the oldest break there is: prehistoric cavemen huddled inside during the cold months. Even bears hibernate.

Spring is the silly season, where it's warm enough to leave your gloves at home but not quite warm enough yet for everybody to start sweating all the time. When you've fallen into a routine, though, it can be difficult to adjust. You might wear your heavy coat out in the suddenly warm weather, for instance – or keep going out to the same mulled wine bars and stuffy pubs that you frequented during winter.

[SECTION]North Swanbourne Nude Beach[/SECTION]

A quick warning: it's technically illegal to get nude here under state law, but nevertheless North Swanbourne Beach manages to be one of the most popular spots for nude bathing in Australia. Naturists have been coming here for almost fifty years, and there's even an official North Swanbourne Beach Users Association dedicated to the joy of swimming naked.

Surprisingly, spring is the perfect time for nude bathing. The same cold weather that makes it uncomfortable to swim also drives away most people from the beaches, creating the perfect secluded atmosphere. At this time of year you'll only find die-hard naturists, not the oglers and perverts that flock to nude beaches in summer.

[SECTION]Mount Lawley Golf Course[/SECTION]

Golf is the perfect spring sport: not quite energetic enough to keep you warm on a cold winter's day, but, if you don't cheat and use a golf cart, it's easy to overheat during summer. If you haven't got a favourite already, try the Mount Lawley Golf Club on 1 Walter Road West, Inglewood. It's quite visitor friendly for an upmarket club (that is, it allows visitors on some weekdays) and it's a very reliable course.

No matter your skill level, it's always fun to get a few friends together and play. Not great at fine control? Hire a club and whack some balls Happy-Gilmore-style at a driving range. Too feeble for that? There's always the putting green, which is much harder to humiliate yourself on. A little friendly competition – perhaps assisted by a handicap – is an excellent way to ring in the changing of the seasons.

[SECTION]Rottnest Island[/SECTION]

Ask anybody to describe the seasons, and when they get to spring they'll mention trees and flowers. This is the time of year when nature is at its most beautiful – for instance, you won't see yellowed grass or fading flower petals. So why not head over to Rottnest Island and check some nature out? It's only a thirty-minute ferry ride from the city, and the crowds won't arrive until the summer heat does. Sure, you might not be able to swim comfortably at the beaches, but there's a wealth of things to do instead.

You could do some fishing (as long as you stay away from the protected areas), or bring some bicycles across and take a tour of the island. There are walks honeycombing all the major beaches. If you're feeling especially lazy, just kick back in the bakery and enjoy the casual atmosphere. And who knows? By the time summer rolls around, you might not have left.
