I have been to the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne on several occasions, picnics, walks and water fights and I have always enjoyed the gardens as an escape from the city IN THE city. The many varieties of flowers and other vegetation along with the small lakes and gazebos add character to the gardens, but it is the subtle rising and falling of the landscape that has always intrigued me. Although it must be said that after walking a fair amount one may experience symptoms of panting and your legs becoming rather fussy about the undulations.
If you love free things and nature it is worthy to note down that next Sunday is the Spring Open Day here. After investigating a bit I found out that Spring Open day is the highlight of the Royal Botanic Garden's calendar, offering heaps of garden related fun.
So if you want to spend a day learning how to climb trees, bush walking with an indigenous guide, bird watching and shopping for plants this is the event to go to. They also offer gardening advice, a look behind the scenes of the Plant Nursery and Herbarium and tours of the Melbourne Historic Observatory. There are some special children oriented activities such as seed planting, bug discovery walks, mini raft races, nest building, storytelling and music.
