Ahh, Spring is finally here. If you are like me, you are probably chaffing at the bit to get out and explore some gorgeous gardens. We all love a sticky beak in other people's gardens because it gives us inspiration and lots of ideas. Plus you get to see something beautiful and after a long cold winter, we all need some sunshine and a cheery day out.

Here is my round up of selected country garden events and open gardens this Spring. I have been to all of these events in previous years and highly recommend them. I do hope you get out to see some of them. They are all in the country, so make a day trip or even a quick getaway weekend.

SA SPRING GARDEN FESTIVAL
Saturday 22nd September 8am- 3pm
Mt Pleasant Showgrounds. Entry is $5, $3 conc, kids under 15 free.
Set in the pretty hills town this will be a bumper day of all things gardening, with stalls, guest speakers and demonstrations, including Sophie Thompson. Plenty to do with kids floral art workshops, and lots of food and plants and garden decor to purchase. Also on is the local Farmers Market chock full of fresh local produce. Go early and spend the day. The caravan park is in the same complex so take the van and make a weekend of it.

PORT ELLIOT GARDEN WALK
Sunday 23 September from 10- 4.30
One price at $15 gives you entry into four very different gardens. One is a historic garden established in the 1850s and another is an artists studio and garden. A map is given when you buy your ticket at South Seas Books and Trading at 53 North Tce in the middle of town. You will probably want to return there to check out this great little store. If I were you I would stay the night down by the sea.

THE FOOD FOREST SPRING OPEN DAY
September 30th Located in Gawler.
80 Clifford Drive, Hillier.
This huge farm is a working produce garden. The owners are experts in alternative straw bale building and permaculture gardening. The open day has sessions on both of these topics with more information here At 3 hours, I found the permaculture walk a little longer with not much walking. After too long standing in the one spot I ended up strolling around by myself. Get there earlier as it takes a while to park way down the road and walk down to the starting point. It is a fabulous place to see acres of fruit trees, geese and vegetables. The owners started the Adelaide Farmers Markets and sell produce there every Sunday.

ANLABY HISTORIC STATION-OPEN GARDEN
October 20th from 10 am. Last entry by 3.30pm.
Travel via Kapunda and then on the Eudunda Rd, there is a turn off to Anlaby. Contact Andrew Morphett on 8566 2465.

Wander around 10 acres of this historic estate to see old gardens, stone outbuildings and more. Sheep shearing, plant and sculpture sales. Plenty of wine food and drinks on sale or take a picnic. Organisers are asking that you pre register online at anlaby website here.

IRIS GARDENS ( Kapunda and Eudunda)
See my list here of the four locations to see some magnificent iris gardens and nurseries during October in the mid-north.

LONG WEEKEND 30 September to October 1st.
OPEN GARDEN AT AL RU FARM
1016 One Tree Hill Rd at One Tree Hill.
A large garden with a big refreshment area set up. Some stalls and outbuildings to explore. Little paths to wander through the Spring flowers. This is a delightful garden you must see.

Also on the long weekend is OPEN GARDEN AT AVONDALE 2 AT RHYNIE
142 Avondale Rd Rhynie on the highway to Clare. Open 10.30-4.30 all weekend.
This is a large country garden of 2 acres, with lots of stonework garden beds and paths. Masses of bulbs and flowers and good use of ornamental trees such as Manchurian pears. Worth a drive and explore some other towns in the district while you are there.

RENMARK ROSE FESTIVAL
Friday October 19th to Sunday October 28th.
renmarkroses.com
If you love spring gardens and especially roses, you simply cannot miss the best garden event in our state. This festival has been running for 24 years and it is a fantastic time away in the country. Many open gardens, walking trails and other events are on. The private home gardens are all different and stunning. Residents put in a lot of effort for visitors. Best to go for a weekend or maybe longer and visit the other towns nearby.
