Spring in Canberra is the season of flowers, Floriade...and fetes.

How I love a good old-fashioned fete with its cake stalls, jams, fairy floss, white elephant stalls, chocolate wheel, raffles, jumping castle, and of course, the all important lucky dips!

With the warmer days now upon us, spring is the time of the year when many schools and churches hold their annual fetes and fairs. For many, these are important fundraising events which volunteers have worked hard all year putting together. One mum I know has been perfecting her scone-baking skills for months in preparation for her child's school's annual fete. Her scones will sell like hotcakes, I'm sure.

Here are some of the many spring fetes and fairs that will take place over September, October and November across the Canberra region. Come along to one or two or three or more, and support your local schools and churches.

Sept 22 St Andrew's Church Fair at St Andrew's Church, 1 State Circle, Forrest. There will be cakes, jams, chutneys, conserves, tasty homemade Indonesian treats, books for sale, as well as pre-loved toys, quality second-hand clothing, plants, jewellery and bric-a-brac.

Sept 22 Sacred Heart School's Big Spring Fete at Sacred Heart Primary School, 29 Murphy Street, Pearce.

Sept 22 St Philip's Anglican Church Spring Fling at the cnr Moorhouse and Macpherson Streets, O'Connor. There'll be books, pre-loved fashions, and kitchenware for sale, as well as yummy food, live music and a fashion parade.

Sept 23 Duffy Primary School Community Fair at Duffy Primary School, 55 Burrinjuck Cres, Duffy. There'll be pizza, sausages, ice cream, and activities for kids include a reptile display, putt-putt golf, jumping castle and a Velcro fly wall!

Oct 20 Macgregor Primary School Fete at Hirschfield Crescent, Macgregor.

Oct 20 St John's Community Fair at St John's Anglican Church, cnr Constitution Avenue and Anzac Park West, Reid. Enjoy a day of entertainment, delicious food stalls, coffee van, plants and clothing for sale, Devonshire teas, homemade jams and cakes, white elephant goods, pony rides for the kids, and reptiles!
