In partnership with BeachPatrol and Love Our Street

This Saturday 8th October, get your family, friends, workmates and housemates together to Spring Clean The City!

Held from 8:15 am - 11 am at Queensbridge Square, Southbank, this is a special opportunity to join hundreds of Love Our Street volunteers and help clean the CBD of more than 2000kg of single-use disposable plastic litter.

From drink containers and cups to lids and straws, volunteers will be diving into every street and laneway in central Melbourne to collect and sort the tsunami of plastic rubbish scattered around the city.

Unfortunately, the problem of plastic litter impacting our wildlife and causing harm across our bays, waterways and streets is still prevalent. In Port Phillip Bay last year, 255 interventions were actioned by Marine Response Unit and 105 interventions by other parties including DELWP staff, Parks Victoria staff, Wildlife Victoria volunteers, registered rescuers and carers, and members of the public. In total -167 interventions to save marine life entangled in plastic, including birds, penguins, seals, pelicans, and black swans (Marine Response Unit, 2021).

This issue can be prevented and you can be part of the solution! Come along this Saturday 8th October and help refocus attention on the issues caused by plastic litter.

Here's how to take part:

  • 1. Bring your favourite litter collection bags and picker, gloves, and anything else you'll need. Include your reusable water bottle and snacks.

  • 2. Meet at Queensbridge Square Southbank at 8:15am for registration and clean area assignment.

  • 3. Group photo at 8:50am before you head off!

  • 4. Share your clean adventure on socials and #springcleanthecity

  • 5. Return the litter collected by 11am to help sort into the main categories.

The items will be sorted into drink bottles and cans, PPE items, coffee cups/lids, other plastic cups, plastic straws and plastic bottle tops.

The data collected will be entered into the LitterStopper app to continue to raise the issues of single-use plastics.

Since its inception in 2018, Spring Clean the City volunteers have collected thousands of bags of rubbish including 4351 plastic drink bottles, 3427 metal drink cans and 2599 glass drink bottles, weighing more than 5582kg.

It's FREE to take part in Spring Clean The City 2022 and no registration is required. For all the latest on the event, please join the Facebook Event here.
