Heritage listed Spring Bluff Railway Station is on the main railway line from Ipswich to Toowoomba. With 150 years of history, its gardens excel every spring for the Carnival of Flowers and this year is no exception.

Its beautiful blooms, trees and shrubs this year include dianthus, snapdragons, pansies, nasturtium, peach and cherry blossoms, poppies, sweet peas (Bijou), clivias, arum lilies, ferns, staghorn and bamboo.

As well as gardens, there are picnic grounds, bush walks, free barbecue facilities and wildlife. The air is full of birdsong and mature trees tower over the station from the hillside. A charming bridge crosses the creek, where there is also a cascade.

Historic buildings such as the porter's cottage of 1876 give the station an olde world feeling, plus displays with historical information and photos. Spring Bluff is the principal station on the range climb between Murphy's Creek and Toowoomba. Building began in 1866. The station was first used by locals up unto the Highfields sawmill. The crossing loop was last extended in 1967 to handle the increasing length of trains. In earlier days, two train engines were required to climb the Great Dividing Range. Passengers found the train and the views memorable. Trains run from Ipswich during Carnival of Flowers for passengers to breathe in the scents and sights of the stunning gardens. It's a relaxing place to unwind in the country.

If you happen to visit when the cafe is closed, there is a coffee van in the carpark serving coffee ($6), Twinings tea, iced latte and chai, chocolate milkshakes and Churros (GF from $5.50 to $9.50) till 3pm, when the last train leaves.

To get there by road from Toowoomba, turn off the New England Highway onto Murphy's Creek Road then left onto McCormack Road (directional signs are posted). It's about twenty minutes' drive north of Toowoomba. No caravans allowed. No pets please. For enquiries telephone 07 4688 6883 or email [email protected]. Carnival of Flowers and the Spring Bluff Railway Station and gardens will be operating for carnival until 30 September 2023.
