Wintry days of fabulous sunshine calling me to head out and check the state of the world. So I headed to Mt Coot-Tha to check out the Spotted Gum Trail. You can find a comprehensive article on the trail by Roy Chambers who has written extensively about it for WeekendNotes. Click here for Roy's really good article about the trail.

BCC has been a little more diligent about signposting this. You can start within the botanic gardens and make your way to the summit or start from an entrance by the summit parking and make your way down to the gardens. Either way, it is not overly arduous, a few up and downs with a fair number of steps too but largely flat broad paths. You are better off parking and doing a round trip to your car or bus stop.
There is not much in flower at the moment, so my game for the day is a little different but should appeal to those who have a keen interest in trees. Spot the tree from its trunk.

I have to say I was fascinated to see the sap, the dimpled patterns, the naked bark, the covered bark, the burnt bark. The colours ranging from the palest green to the brightest orange with shades of brown and black and grey. Could they be spotted, large leaf spotted, grey gum, stringybark, ironbark, gum topped box, scribbly or red to name but a few? Take the path and see how many you can identify.
