Many visitors and locals in Brisbane assume that you need to leave the city area to see wildlife. However Brisbane has many green zones specifically designed to protect the area's native plants and animals and these provide plenty of opportunities for wildlife spotting. In fact Brisbane itself is better for this than many of the national parks simply because many animals prefer the plains to the mountains.

Daisy Hill Reserve

Daisy Hill is where I regularly recommend people who want to see koalas and other wildlife to go visit. The Daisy Hill Conservation Park is a great place for seeing everything from local birdlife, wallabies and even, if you are lucky, koalas. The best thing about Daisy Hill is that there is also a small koala zoo that you can visit if you are not lucky enough to spot koalas in the wild.

Tinchi Tamba Wetlands

Of the wetlands that I have visited in Brisbane, Tinchi Tamba is my favourite. Not only is it a stopping point for migratory birds flying down during the northern winter but there is even a mob of kangaroos in the area as well. It is also a popular place for kayaking.

North Stradbroke Island

The are hundreds of reasons to visit North Stradbroke Island but for sea life spotters it is to see sea turtles, dolphins and even dugongs at any time of the year and a chance to see whales from Point Lookout during whale watching season.

Boondall Wetlands

The most famous of Brisbane's wetlands areas tend to a little over rated, however their first class visitors centre and regular guided tours make it a great first place to go in Brisbane for spotting wading and migratory birds.

[ Koala Bushlands

This is network of reserves south of Brisbane that the Brisbane City Council claims to be home to at least 3000 koalas. Most locals say that they have never managed to spot a koala in the area. I have personally spotted a number of wallabies, bird life, water dragons and turtles in this area. A friend said they also saw kangaroos.

What makes this area a stand out is that at the Alperton Road visitor node this is a great interactive guide to the wildlife of the area. This includes signs to spot as well as wildlife calls to listen for.

Nudgee Beach Wetlands

I have to admit that I normally only go to Nudgee beach because of the little cafe full of cyclists like me enjoying a coffee or breakfast. Nudgee Beach also has the lovely Nudgee Beach Wildlife Reserve, great during the migratory bird season.

Caring for our Bushland

Brisbane abounds in wildlife so locals and visitors don't have far to go to spot, wallabies, kangaroos, koalas and birds. Please remember to care for both the bushland and animals, including staying on marked tracks, not leaving litter behind and not disturbing wildlife.
