A healthy brunch in a bamboo garden
I always enjoy a simple, nourishing brunch, especially in a relaxing place like Spoonful Cafe & Living in Neutral Bay. I read about this little retreat from the world over a year ago. Finally, I ticked this one off the list and discovered it's the refreshing delight I had imagined.
A Spoonful of healthy food
You'll find this Spoonful of bliss at 97 Military Road. Wander in and enjoy whimsical wafts of essential oils and a calming atmosphere to contrast this non-stop road. With mindfulness colouring books, light-up oil-diffusers, organic, Australian-made body products, and more, it makes for wonderful gift-shopping, or a therapeutic take-home treat.
Take a seat out the back in the tranquil bamboo garden. I found this reminiscent of both Japan with the pebbles, and Bali with the teak hut. In this humble, exotic retreat, where we were feeling the serenity, we took a look at their menu of light meals full of nutrition.
Detox juice with ginger
Drinks include a range of coffees, tea, and fresh juices - including my much-needed detox drink with carrot and ginger. Food-wise, the healthy granola and fruit parfaits looked exciting, as did the colourful superfood bowls - Acai and super green protein. On the savoury side, one dish that caught my eye was the warm pesto chicken bowl packed with veggies and buckwheat noodles.
Vegan and salmon open sandwiches
I ended up choosing the vegan open sandwich for something clean and easy, fresh, and full of greens to aid the detox. I was testing out the theory I heard that such food is good for hangovers, and I have to say, together with the juice, I was somewhat refreshed. This dish had sourdough topped with tomatoes, mixed greens, beetroot that added an earthy flavour, and pesto for some zestiness.
The salmon, avocado and greens on my friend's open sandwich were also fresh and hit the spot. We could say this brunch served us a spoonful of relaxation, a spoonful of happiness and a spoonful of health and wellbeing. Looking forward to another visit.
