SPLASH is a newly formed percussion ensemble at the University of Sydney.

James Guest, the artistic director of the SPLASH also known as the Sydney University Percussion Ensemble, the inaugural and only percussion ensemble on the main USYD campus, celebrates percussion as the vanguard of artistic performance rather than the more traditional secondary role in orchestra settings.

He is a long veteran of the Sydney University Wind Orchestra and has collected many orchestra members in the percussion section to join SPLASH.

Splash sends an exciting invitation to the public for its upcoming concert City Lights. City Lights is to be a convincing representation of the intricacies of living in the great city of Sydney with the concert repertoire demonstrating distinguished modern composers of percussion ensembles that evoke a palette of emotions.

From intense musical layering of rhythms and fast pacing to the sublime tone of mallet percussion instruments, SPLASH will present a rollercoaster of music tailored to popular tastes.

The contemporaries of Steve Reich and his minimalistic influences and John Cage and his administration of innovative forms in music making are only two persuasive points to attend SPLASH's City Lights.

The concert program:

Chris Crockarell Brooms Hilda
Mark Ford Stubernic
Eric Whitacre arr. James Guest Lux Aurumque
Ian Cleworth #1 For Snare Drum
J.S. Bach Trio Sonata 1 in Eb Major

INTERMISSION

John Cage 3rd Construction
George Hamilton Green arr. Bob Becker Log Cabin Blues
Steve Reich Clapping Music
John Parker Modern Life

Steve Reich's Clapping Music has emerged as one of the most exciting and fun live performances. At my first observation and hearing, I assumed perhaps the most unknowing and confused expressions. A few performers stood on the stage, simply clapping out of rhythmic alignment. I soon after sought the sheet music and discovered a simple but original and arresting idea conveyed in a page and less. Click here to view a video live performance of Clapping Music

It remains nevertheless as one of the prominent percussion ensemble pieces existing as a favorite for percussionists and all watching reminding us that percussion and music making is as integrated into society as sitting, standing and any action that is sound. It is no surprise it finds itself almost to the end of SPLASH's concert.

The tickets are cheap and available at the door.
