Forget lingerie parties and don't even think about a Tupperware party.
If you are looking forward to getting a few girlfriends together let's think Tea Leaf Reading. That's right - have your tea leaves read. That's what went down at our office Christmas party this year.
Kate from The Spiritual Realm visited our work site armed with fresh scones, jam and cream. Not only was it a pleasure to log off computers and phones, it was lovely to smell the aromas of several organic and fruity teas that were passed around the room. I selected a Gogi Acai Green Tea, which quietly brewed away as Kate explained the process and gave a little history of tea leaf reading.
My tea selection
She then walked us through a Prosperity Spell, which included parsley as a prompt and had us all enthralled. This activity certainly heightened the energy level in the room and we then proceeded to finish off our Devonshire Tea, leaving only half a teaspoon of liquid in the cup.
Finally, we had to turn our cups over onto the saucer following a ritual that brought together our "pasts, present, and futures".
As there were ten in the group Kate limited us to a twenty minute reading each, which meant that most of us could continue with work tasks in the interim. This worked out well as it meant no one sat around getting bored or antsy.
Sharing my leaves with you all
This would be a great beginning to a hen's night or birthday party as breaks between readings would allow you to chat with friends and family.
The reading itself? Look, I'm renowned in my work place for being " the responsible one", the thorn amongst a group of women who are deeply spiritual, new age, airy-fairy, arty-farty, and genuinely genteel folk.
A week before the reading I had relocated homes after twenty-five years. Twenty-five years holds a lot of memories and the strongest ones are those of pets with whom I have shared my life and that of my family. Quite bizarrely I had actually discussed with a non-work colleague leaving "the spirits of my pets behind at the old place". My workmates must be rubbing off on me as when I entered my new home, I welcomed my spirit pets. Thank goodness no-one witnessed this or they would have thought that the pressure had finally broken me!
So what was the first thing Kate saw in my tea leaves? My beautiful brown Bassett Hound who will forever remain my first (and best behaved) child, and Sam, my recently deceased galah. Galahs mate for life, did you know that! We met one winter;s day when I was wearing a pink dressing gown, so of course, he took me for a larger than normal mate.
Don't believe it? Kate even showed me the particular leaves which were her reference point.
Classes are also available
Regardless of your beliefs, this little exercise was great fun and a great way to wind down after a big year. Or even as an ice breaker starting into the new year.
