Sharing the community spirit to help others
They have performed at Perth Concert Hall, St Georges Cathedral and Perth Town Hall, as well as many regular gigs at corporate and community events. They are not the usual choir singing four part harmonies but a self proclaimed rough crew coming from all walks of life. They share one thing in common - having experienced loneliness and hardship.
Starting in 1997 from Big Issue Magazine members, who sell the current affairs magazine on street corners, the choir quickly grew to reflect a wider diversity of the members.
Their goal is to raise awareness and to increase musical opportunities for people living on the fringe of society. They share their message of mental illness, disabilities and homelessness to show their lives are turned around and gives them something to sing about.
The Spirit of the Street Choir is joining with Mercedes College Select Choir for a Sharing the Spirit concert at Perth Town Hall on 20 October at 3.00pm.
