We all grew up with images of snow-covered fields and open fires at Christmas. Santa rides a sleigh, and there are not too many modern Australian homes with chimneys for the big man in red to shimmy down. Federation Square in the centre of the CBD, has taken these images of a northern hemisphere Christmas and created their own winter wonderland, in the heart and heat of the Melbourne summer. The Federation Square Spirit of the Square for 2014 will be designed by Melbourne-based design team Sibling, who were responsible for the Reading Room at the National Gallery of Victoria earlier this year as part of Melbourne Now, as well as the design of Mr Brightside café and the fit out of The Thousands Shop in Curtain House, Swanston St. Sibling will be creating a space called 'Whiteout', which is part installation, part backdrop. Make up of large snow-white spheres throughout Federation Square's main square, which will pop-up to crate a sense of immersion.
With an emphasis on immersion and participation, this winter landscape is a child and family friendly playground, which will include movie screenings, big screen gaming, live music and more. The program runs from 1 – 25 December and all events are free! Key events and dates to note include:
Every Monday from 1 to 25 December, 6-8pm
The big screen at Federation Square is a favorite during major events. It screens all the tennis matches, sports finals and the Melbourne Cup. This December it will also screen a rotation of festive films, to get you geared up for Christmas!
