Spiralise – Book Review

Pete Evans cookbook Spiralise! contains sixty delicious meals to make utilising ingredients which have been through a spiralizer.

The book covers the basics of how to use a spiralizer and has a handy list of all the different fruit and vegetables you can use. This surprising list includes apple, beetroot, carrot, celeriac, cucumber, daikon, green papaya, kohlrabi, parsnip, pumpkin, radish, squash, swede, sweet potato, taro, turnip and zucchini.

We tried the chicken and cashew stir fry recipe with carrots and spiralised into thin noodles. It was packed with flavour and I didn't miss the carbohydrate heavy noodles. I also tried Pete's recipe for coconut chia bowl with spiralised apples, topped with fresh berries. I haven't included a photograph of this one because it looked like mush after being refrigerated overnight, but it tasted great.

The recipes are divided into breakfast, soups, vegetables, seafood, chicken and meat dishes. Every recipe has a full page photograph and a page devoted to the instructions.

Be tempted by recipes for paleo big breakfast with sweet potato rosti, Vietnamese Pho (carrot noodles), caponata with zucchini noodles, Singapore noodles (zucchini) and lamb ragu with parsnip pappardelle.

Fortunately, spiralisers have come down in price since we got ours as a special order from overseas. Ours is easy to clean and use, but it's best to purchase produce which will fit rather than having to cut them down to size. You can find spiralisers in most kitchen shops these days and some have a winding handle which look easier to use.

Once you have experimented with your spiralizer you can convert your regular recipes without much effort.

Spiraliser! By Pete Evans is a great introduction to the world of using a spiralizer to add more vegetables into your diet. It's perfect if you are following a special diet like paleo, gluten free or low carb.

Spiralize! is available in paperback from your favourite bookseller.
