ping-pong anyone?
Launched a few weeks ago, SPiN is a venue that will definitely please more than one crowd. It is based on SPiN Galactic, actress Susan Sarandon's creation, and has eleven Ping-Pong tables aiding its concept which is creating a community that exercises in a social environment (heels et al.). After seeing pictures of the opening night, which also included gorgeous guest starts actor Jesse Metcalf and South Korean Ping-Pong champion Soo Yeon Lee, I decided to go and experience it myself.
On a Friday night, I drove to Wafi Pyramids, walked into a very brightly lit SPiN and spent the night chatting with the friendly waiters. The interior was very sleek and modern with Ping-Pong tables and dining tables spread around each corner of the venue.
The music was nice, very mainstream but the crowd and I danced and sang along, well.. all ten of us in the entire venue. At eleven, the crowd did not increase in size. By twelve I was disappointed. Not only was the place empty but also the Ping-Pong rental was quite pricey as they charged 150 dhs for half an hour. This meant that I would have hit the ball twice.. or three times if I was lucky. The advantage is that there were ball guys available everywhere to collect the Ping-Pong balls so as to not waste time.
I have a big feeling this place is going to become Dubai's next top hotspot, only in time and with enough publicity. I can't wait to go back but with a much bigger crowd and preferably on a Wednesday since it is ladies night and we all know what that means…
