Escape the norm at this Houdini intrigue

"Your mobile phone number, please" as I collect the tickets from a table with a laptop adorned with chains and padlocks. After taking my seat, I put on headphones which have been kindly provided and I am greeted by a soothing female voice who checks I'm all good…or if I want to leave.

This sets the scene for an evening of intriguing theatre based on the final week leading up to Houdini's death in 1926.

The performance by Counterpilot portrays, in a totally unique way, the mystery of the man we know as Houdini, the great escapologist. We become somewhat prying observers on his unfortunate dice with death and his scepticism that he confronts Arthur Conan Doyle on the afterlife.

The Counterpoint actors give an intense performance which is challenging for the audience and performers with some unexpected humour. The concept, with mobile technology and commentary, is clever, contemporary and provides for perfect 'after theatre' discussion in the nearby bars.

Spectate is playing at the Metro Arts Theatre, Brisbane until 18 November. For booking details go to the Metro Arts website.
