While it seems reasonable to batten down the hatchers, put on a hot chocolate and DVD, there are plenty of other great things to do in Melbourne in the winter. Here are some special outings to consider:

Melbourne Star Observation Wheel

%%Ground floor
101 Waterfront Way Docklands

If you've never been on the Melbourne Star, I think this is a must. You can get panoramic views of the city and beyond; unlike any you have ever seen. If you've been in the daytime why not have a night trip and see the beautiful night-lights of Melbourne? You will be given a map to figure out your bearings and it's low enough to see everything and not risk feeling sick.

It only takes 30 minutes to return to the base, so there's plenty of time for some close by warehouse shopping. If you are lucky you will get a whole cabin to yourselves like we did. This is not a cheap outing; it's around $90 for a family but it's worth it.

The Melbourne Star Observation Wheel is right near Costco, the amusement park and ice-skating.

For a comprehensive review of reasons you should visit the star, see this article .

Bounce Indoor Play centres

Glen Iris, Blackburn North and Essendon Fields

Dare I say Bounce centres are springing up everywhere. These large indoor play centres feature many variations for trampolining. They are open seven days a week and until late. You need to book online for an hour at a time (avoid party times because they get priorities). Prices vary, for example, $11 for a student, general access $16. Grip socks must be worn ($2).

Latitude

590 Waterdale Rd, Heidelberg West

This is a bit like Bounce but with some extra challenging activities like rope adventures. As well as the trampolines, there's also climbing, dodge ball court, down rush, basketball lanes and a kid's zone. You need to book on line.

Latitude is a place to bounce, climb and fly! Enjoy our state of the art; this is fun for the whole family.

Tip: Once you buy the socks keep them for next time to avoid that extra expense.

Eureka Tower

Southbank, Melbourne

Take the lift to the 88th storey of the Eureka Tower with the best 360-degree views of Melbourne. This is only $11 but extra for the Edge experience and the photo to prove you did it. I don't want to spoil it, but this is not for those who hate heights!

The Eureka Tower is open everyday from 10am-10pm. At the base you will often encounter live street performances and there's plenty of food venues to eat in or take away. I enjoy sitting on the Yarra with an ice-cream (even in Winter) and watching the passing traffic.
ACMI

Federation Square, Flinders St, Melbourne
If you like a good flick or want to see the latest exhibition, ACMI is the place to go. They also host short talks and symposiums. Many events are free and open to the public but may have limited capacity. Look out for the showings at the Melbourne International Film Festival (30 July- 16 Aug).

Federation Square Activities

Crn Flinders & Swanston St

There's always plenty to do at Federation Square indoors and out. Apart from ACMI movies, special events and other exhibitions, there's the Ian Potter gallery, pop up stands and yummy cafes. Sit in the Yarra or enjoy the children's playground.

For those who are willing to brave the elements

If you are willing to brave the elements there are plenty of great beaches, which are of course absolutely free …unless you can't resist having fish and chips on the beach.

We went recently and the kids had course of fun looking for crabs and digging big holes. All you need is some shovels and buckets and you are set. Not surprisingly they didn't spend much time paddling.

St Kilda, Elwood and Brighton beaches are all within walking distance from some great eateries and there's lots of other things to see while there.

Also worth considering even in winter are the many children's farms and our stunning zoos. There are many articles on Weekend notes reviewing these- search children's farms and Melbourne zoos.
