Closing Night Film - Pan's Labyrinth

Packed with music and laughs, Opening Night's crowd-pleaser The Tribe will teach you to dance your troubles away. Inspired by the self-styled Las Mamis dance troupe of 2016 Spain's Got Talent, this 90-minute musical comedy won Best Film and Best Actress at the Monte Carlo International Film Festival. Director Fernando Colomo nails it in this story of family reconciliation.

A cleaning lady, Virginia, at heart is a street dancer. She reunites with her son, an executive, whom she gave up for adoption at a time he's lost it all. That includes his memory, in a freak accident. However, the same rhythm that runs in the veins of this mother and son will bring them home from their different worlds. This opening night Gala event includes Freixenet Cava on arrival, followed by an afterparty with Torres Wines, tapas and live entertainment in most states.

The Closing Night film Pan's Labyrinth, by the visionary Mexican director Guillermo del Toro, has been my all-time favourite film since it premiered in 2006. It's riveting, whimsical and brutal at the same time and garnered a plethora of Awards at the 2007 Academy Awards and the Goya Spanish Academy Awards. You may recall Del Toro's latest offering The Shape of Water took home four Academy Awards and nine other nominations this year. A fan, it's another film I absolutely adored and is still currently screening.

A dark fairy tale, Pan's Labyrinth is set in 1944 Spain, following a bloody Civil War. Young Ofelia and her pregnant mother go to live at the command post of her new stepfather, a sadistic man. Taking refuge from the terrors of conflict, Ofelia escapes into a magical labyrinth under the ground. She undertakes a quest to claim her crown as princess of this realm, but not without the challenges of all manner of creatures, a grotesque faun and three dangerous tasks she's to complete.

The Bigas Luna Tribute - JAMÓN, JAMÓN

No doubt many of us will identify with Special Event film No Filter. We've all held our tongues, biting down on it, when really, we've wanted to say more. Running rampant at the mouth and hurting others in the onslaught is not exactly what we want to do, but sometimes being overly considerate can take an emotional toll on your psyche, especially when others mistake your silence for weakness and walk all over you.

Director Santiago Segura is a superstar comic and goes head to head with this conundrum in a witty and wonderful way. It's a simple story about a very nice and excessively passive woman who has had enough and unleashes her fury on everyone with no filter! A spiritual healer and the herb remedy he gives her turns her into an unstoppable truth machine, so watch out all those who have stepped on her toes! In most States, sparkling Freixenet Cava and live entertainment is all part of this event.

The Bigas Luna Tribute of this festival refers to Bigas Luna, who was one of Spain's most celebrated contemporary filmmakers and artists. He has 17 feature films which grossed considerable international success, and this retrospective event includes his critically-acclaimed 'Iberian Portraits Trilogy' Jamón, Jamón (which catapulted the career of Penélope Cruz and her real-life husband Javier Bardem), Golden Balls and The Tit and the Moon, as well as Australian premiere doco Bigas x Bigas, based on his video diaries.

Golden Balls

Once you start on the trilogy journey, you'll be compelled to watch them all. 1) A young Bardem and Cruz draw you in like a magnet in a tale of a sexy man for hire enticing the daughter of a prostitute away from a rich mummy's boy. 2) Bardem stars again in a razor-sharp sexual satire as a macho construction worker whose three passions are fried eggs, building skyscrapers and having sex. 3) A soulful, charming erotic fantasy in a mix of coming-of-age fantasy of a nine-year-old mixed with refreshing innocence, bawdy adult humour and rich Catalan imagery.

Find out more about Bigas Luna as he reveals his most personal side as an artist and a human being in the documentary Bigas X Bigas , which was co-produced by Javier Bardem. Obsessed with images, it'll give you some understanding of what drives him in this conspiratorial tête-à-tête. If you're enchanted by Bardem and Cruz, they're also in Loving Pablo, a unique viewpoint of a notorious drug lord told by the woman who knew him most intimately.

This curated program of films will sweep you off your feet and includes a couple of offerings for the kids, however both films screen in Spanish without any subtitles. Coco the highest grossing film of all time in Mexico, and a must-see with its vibrant colours, rousing music and moving story, is about young Miguel who wants to be a music legend. However, music is banned in his family and no one will tell him why. Accidentally stuck in the Land of the Dead, he sets out to discover the truth.

Tad the lost explorer and the secret of King Midas is a sequel to Spain's highest-grossing animated feature ever: Tad the Lost Explorer. In this sequel, Tad must get cleverer than before to save Sara the best-known archaeologist in the world from the villains who kidnap her and steal the ring from King Midas's necklace. His only companions, his loyal dog Jeff, a mute parrot and an unruly Mummy. Start booking if you are to capture any of these amazing films on offer.
