People often ask me why I enjoy foreign films as much as I do, my answer is often accompanied with a question back "well, how can you not enjoy a foreign film?" I take pleasure in the simplicity, deep heartfelt themes and emotive notions, and the artistic elements and characteristic features of each foreign film I watch. I'm looking forward to The Spanish Film Festival, which is back again for another month of glorious and specially crafted films. It's great to see so many festivals outlining the importance of Multiculturalism in our society, celebrating cultural and social differences in a positive way, together. The festival will commence on May 4 with an opening night and after party featuring the popular Spanish romantic comedy Spanish Affair 2.The film follows its predecessor Spanish Affair, a Spanish box office hit about Rafael, who has never left Andalucia, and decides to leave his homeland to follow Amaia, a Basque girl unlike any other women whom he has ever known. The after party will comprise Torres Wines, Alhambra beer, live entertainment and tapas. Palace Nova Eastend - Wednesday 4 May, 6.30pm for a 7pm screening, followed by the after party.

I've compiled a list of my top picks for this years Spanish Film Festival.

Techo y Comida, 'Food and Shelter' is a hauntingly emotive film that explores the European crisis in a way that will move all. Rocío (Natalia de Molina in her award-winning performance) is a young single mother who has been without work for three and a half years in the Andalucian town of Jerez de la Frontera. She is struggling to make ends meet, working odd jobs and getting by day by day, making it difficult to provide for her eight-year old son, Adrian. She is faced with intense and life altering decisions that will impact both hers and her sons future. The film has received great and immense recognition for the natural and moving perfomance from de Molina. Food and Shelter was the winner of the 2016 Goya Awards: Best Actress and 2015 Málaga Film Festival: Best Actress, Audience Award.

Ma Ma is another highly anticipated film starring reputable actress Penelope Cruz as the protagonist Magda; an unemployed teacher who is unexpectedly diagnosed with breast cancer, This revelation sends Magda into a state of distress, where she meets Arturo, a husband and father who is similarly dealing with his own personal crisis. Both characters build a bond over their existing traumas, and become one another's primary support as they undergo their separate ordeals, developing an attachment that deepens further.

For a more light and fun-filled film, We Are Pregnant is a humorous feature of the Spanish Film Festival. Alina (Alexandra Jiménez) is ready to have a baby, however complications arise when she's diagnosed as premenopausal at a mere 37 years old. Both Alina and her partner Fran decide to proceed with IVF treatment, but this process brings about a revelation of their seemingly perfect relationship, and both characters begin to question the concept of parenthood. Award-winning director Juana Macías (Planes para manana, 2010) explores a significant and prevalent issue that's relatable to many couples attempting to conceive, yet she approaches the matter in a playful and comedic means through two very likeable characters.

Director Pablo Trapero brings you The Clan; a box-office hit in Argentina that reached the strongest opening ever for an Argentine Film. The Clan tells the horrific true story of the middle-class Puccio family, who in the early 1980's kidnapped wealthy people and imprisoned them in their own home until families paid a substantial amount of ransom money. Arquimedes Puccio did unthinkable things to his victims, with support from politicians and even the police Commodoro who turned a blind eye to the events and disappearances. The Clan is a thriller, verging into horror, with startling scenes that undoubtedly make the film an unmissable festival highlight, having won awards at the prestigious Venice and Toronto International Film Festivals. It dominated the Argentinian Academy Awards, and won best Ibero- American film at the recent Goyas. *This trailer contains thrilling scenes.

Be sure to visit the online program for a detailed schedule and snapshot of each featured film. Ranging from comedy, romance, drama, thriller or a combination of genres, there's something for everyone at this years Spanish Film Festival.
