Melbourne's hippest social design collective has found a permanent home in St Kilda. Space2B is the lovechild of Janine Lawrie, a St Kilda based fashion and textile design entrepreneur, and Mariam Issa, the Australian-Somalian founder of RAW community garden in Brighton. Together with their army of volunteers and mentors, they have created a very cool, and very important space where established Australian designers and artists work together with refugee and migrant women to create chic urban designer products, aimed to appeal to the electric and discerning Melbourne market. In doing so, these deserving and vibrant women build skills, knowledge and friendships that help them become established in their new environment. Janine Lawrie, the co-founder, says that Space2B is also about building connections and a sense of belonging for newly arrived women.



Now at 144 Chapel Street, St Kilda, directly opposite the St Kilda Primary School, Space2B have found a wonderful, airy space for showcasing the designer products, fashion and giftware for what has to be the feel-good christmas shopping experience of the year. There is also space for their exhibitions gallery, and plans for a crowd-funded cafe space which will be managed and run by migrant and refugee women aiming to gain experience in hospitality.



Between now and Christmas, they are also running a series of special Christmas workshops - all-comers welcome - the December ones focus on producing gorgeous handmade Christmas gifts. These are a great way to spend a few hours in warm and friendly company at a cost of just $15, including materials.

The shop is open from 10am-5pm Wednesday to Friday and till 3pm on Saturdays. Space2B's motto is ''Together We Can Make A Difference' - you can be a part of that too by doing your Christmas shopping there or asking how else you can get involved. You won't be sorry you did.
