Have you noticed something in the air in Melbourne this winter, besides the chill?

There are all these incentives to get people to rug up and venture outside their homes.

Because let's face it, compared to Europe and even Tasmania (if you want to make a local comparison) it just 'ain't that cold.

Drawcards have included the Light in Winter Festival, a host of winter solstice activities and now Southgate is jumping on the fire with their progressive dinners.

These run every Sunday and Monday from 23 June to 2 September.

Although they are advertising them as dinners, the Sunday option is actually a nice long lunch.

There are different sets of venues on different dates with minimal walks between them. And you can be assured that because they are in Southgate that there will be some picturesque skyline views over Melbourne.

Depending on the night you might have an entree at Tutto Bene (Italian phrase for "everything's good!"); a main at Miyako which is a fine dining Japanese restaurant and then a dessert at The Deck -- a small, intimate restaurant with soft lighting and great music.

Other sets of progressive dinners might find you having an entree at Pure South which is known for its seafood and a main at #8206 ;">Wagamama which is famous for its Japanese noodles and bento boxes. Then you could finish off at La Camera which has romantic city light views.

Other options include Red Emperor which has sensational reviews and a great setting, Bearbrass and the ever so cosy #8206 ;">P.J.OBrien's , an Irish pub that serves good hearty winter meals and has music on every night of the week.

The beauty of these progressive dinners is the chance to sample some of Southgate's restaurants you haven't managed to try yet.

Bookings are essential, and dinners start sharp at 7pm while Sunday lunches start at 12 pm.

There are two and three course options.

Option 1
Two courses, each matched with a glass of wine;
$45 per person

OR

Option 2

Three courses matched with a glass of wine, tea or coffee with dessert;
$85 per person

Given you get wine as well these meals are excellent value. These progressive dinners are one of the many bonuses of leaving your den this winter.

You can book here .

If you know Southgate too well and want to try something different there are also progressive dinners this winter further up at the new WTC Wharf World Trade Centre (Riverside) Click here .
