As an explorer and an adventurer, each time I visit Melbourne, I choose to stay in a different locality. Recently, the purpose of my visit had me placed right in the 'Arts' Hub' region of Southgate. Well, all I can say is, this is definitely a 'top of the list' location to stay in Melbourne.

How wonderful it was to be able to walk out the door and not face the car traffic on the roads. Having previously stayed in Collins Street, Docklands and St Kilda, once you step outside the hotel, you are generally greeted with the daily congestions of traffic.

However, if you stay in Southgate and you 'want this', you can just walk across the Princes Bridge, past Federation Square and within just a few minutes, "Hello, Collins Street". From here, your little hard-working feet can take you anywhere you want to go.

Okay, so the deal and the delights of staying in Southgate are;

  • It's a river location, which is pleasant, interesting and vibrant

  • Only a few minutes walk to all your fabulous Art Centres, Hamer Hall and NGV International

  • Only a few minutes walk to the beautiful Alexandra Gardens

  • The wonderful choice of restaurants and bars along the river, again, pedestrians only, but 'watch out' for those fast travelling bike riders

  • You can chill out anywhere along the boadwalk to 'people watch' - there is hardly a dull moment!

  • It's well lit up at night and that helps you to feel 'kind of safe'

    The entertainment value.
    Another treasure of Southgate being pedestrian only is that it creates a platform space for creative people to randomly appear day or night, to perform for you. This is 'their' stage and 'you' (the public) are their audience. They will entertain you and I'm sure, entertain themselves, as get to practice their craft in front of you. Yes, they will ask you for a donation at the end of their performance, but this is your choice.

    Oh, and there is indeed a lot more to love about this location, but I think it is best for you to go and discover the best bits for yourself.

    Enjoy.

    Good article highlighting the salient benefits of Southgate.
    Importantly the main concert hall is Hamer Hall (named after the premier who was also the Arts Minister) NOT Hammer Hall!
