Southgate Footbridge

The Yarra Footbridge links the
Flinders St Station to
Southgate and is located on the Yarra between the Princes and the Sandridge Bridges. It was built in 1989, and as such is a relatively new pedestrian only crossing. It is a very busy thorough fare, with lots of foot traffic.
On closer inspection it reveals a few unexpected features. The first is a string of
"Love Locks" which adorn the sides of the bridge.
A
Love lock is a symbol of love between two people. It could be for a love interest of some kind or for a special relationship. If you live in Melbourne then this is the place to attach your
Love Lock perhaps after a romantic evening or a lovely walk - the choice is yours.
You will need to purchase your padlock and inscribe on it your own and your loved one's name or initials and then secure it to the railing and throw away the key to symbolize your unbreakable bond.
Under the bridge there is
Ponyfish Island bar that clings to a pylon beneath the bridge, in the middle of the Yarra River. It is an open air bar that is surrounded by water on both sides and it not at all wheel chair friendly as it is only accessible by the stairs the above bridge.
I do believe this might be Australia's smallest island.
So next time you are walking across this bridge consider placing a padlock (a
love padlock of course) of your own to declare your love for someone special and perhaps finish the event off with a drink on Ponyfish Island.
