Until 1896, North and formed one large sand island but constant heavy storms eventually caused the islands to split. The two islands are separated by the Jumpinpin Channel. While
North Stradbroke Island , the larger of the two, is a well populated tourist attraction, South Stradbroke (which is only two kilometres wide) is a quieter holiday destination with many pockets of protected forest.

What to do:
The island contains twenty-two kilometres of beach on the western and eastern shores. These beaches are good for surfing but are unpatrolled so are not recommended for swimming. The interior of the island contains rainforest and wetlands for hiking and bushwalking. The islands resorts provide tourist tours and packages like canoeing, jet skiing, fishing and rock climbing.
