Running from
Friday 6 May to Sunday 15 May 2022,
South Side Festival is taking over multiple venues and spaces across Frankston city and transforming them into places and spaces to experience art, culture, heritage and food in perhaps a way you never have before. Download the
program here for free and ticketed events.
Art in many forms are on the agenda. Apart from
A Thousand Different Angles , the other exhibitions are free. However, the $6 cost includes entry into McClelland Gallery and Sculpture Park. Members and children still go free. You'll find works of diverse scale from small maquettes to monumental public sculptures set in a bushland environment.
That's just one exhibition of six. Others include a colourful immersive installation of sculptural works and wallpaper inspired prints; a baby grand piano becomes a canvas for a video projection; plant fragments that examines the rising sea levels; colourful uninhibited art from Mangkaja artists; and a tree-loving photographic collaboration. It's always an interesting journey to take a walk through the minds of the artists and see through their eyes.
If you're looking to feed your mind and body, there are
workshops and talks that could inspire and be a revelation. Again, three of four are free events, so there's much to enjoy at little to no cost for everyone. Sit down with some of the Peninsula's brightest literary stars to chat with ABC journalist, author and lifelong local, Paul Kennedy to discuss the beauty that is a favourite book. Want to find out more about what a social enterprise is? The festival has that covered. If you're looking for answers about how to get your project off the ground, join
HATCH, The Mechanics of Making New Work .
The
ticketed event is again at McClelland Gallery and Sculpture Park. This time it's a journey of connection through music, movement and breath, a chance to explore self, others and land with your senses. If you're looking for
family friendly events where the whole family can join in, they include the art exhibitions, performing arts, Murrundaya Yepengna dance workshops, live music performances, the Little Beauty Market and more.
If entertainment is what you're after, there are other
music and
art and culture events with a bit of theatre that's geared towards a 16 and 18 plus audience. You can enjoy a UV performance art party that has a huge range of performance artists who'll give you circus, burlesque, art and debauchery all night long. Or you could sit back and enjoy Reck&
#333 ;ning, a performance about rediscovering ancestry and Indigenous bloodlines. Mindy Meng Wang - Music Victoria Musician of the Year (2021) will take you on an emotional journey with 'When?'. Funky Town, Piano Bar, Choir or live sessions literally off the back of a Triton, the festival has you covered.
If it's a Piano Bar with drag queens and glitter and 3 spectacular drag shows, you're after 'Pitch Please'. From Circa's Peepshow to Drag Bingo, you'll find it at the festival. There's
something for everyone to enjoy. Stay in touch via
Facebook for updates. Meanwhile, take a good look at the
program to map out all you want to immerse yourself in and start putting those reminders in your diary.
