The South Heritage Trail is a short scenic bushwalk that offers panoramic views of the Sydney Harbour and is very much off the beaten tourist track. If you have been to The Gap near Watson's Bay, this spot is not far off and is less crowded which is always a bonus.
After a nice relaxing swim in Camp Cove beach, head up the wooden stairs at the northern end of the beach which marks the start of the Sydney Harbour National Park. This short 30-40 min walk is the perfect way to dry off after your swim.
At the top of the stairs, follow the footpath which takes you all the way to the Lighthouse loop track, approximately 500m away. Take in all there is to see as you meander down the footpath. The city skyline is stunning and paints a gorgeous backdrop for Camp Cove beach.
You will pass some cliffs which are popular dive spots for daredevils. I enjoyed watching the young people taunt and challenge each other to jump off the cliff. The walk is made more interesting with some historic relics dotted along the way. There is a disused cannon, gun emplacement and rifle wall that was apparently placed there prior to 1890, according to this website.
As you continue on the footpath you will come to a sign that says 'Lady Bay Beach' at the entrance to a tiny path leading down to an enclosed beach. At first glance it seemed like a quiet undiscovered spot for beach revellers and I was excited to check it out. A few steps closer and I realised that it was a nudist beach filled with skinny dippers. A little bemused by my discovery I stopped snapping pictures for fear of offending any of the nudists at the intrusion of their privacy.
Moving along the track, you are treated to endless sweeping views of the harbour. The circuit that goes around the lighthouse is marked by a sign saying 'South Head Heritage Trail' and it is a pleasant 470m walk taking you to the very tip of the Sydney Harbour's South Head. The funky looking Hornby lighthouse reminded me of the classic red and white big tops you see in circuses. Spend a moment or two looking out to the clear blue horizon and you'll feel so small amidst your surroundings.
The loop track continues past more historic relics and then back to the 'South Head Heritage Trail' sign. From there it is the same path back to Camp Cove beach. This is a highly recommended simple walk that requires little planning and you can even enjoy it with your little ones.
