Pathways for connecting museums and the community
The South East Queensland Small Museums Conference 2014 presented by the Redland Museum and North Stradbroke Island Historical Museum with support from Redland Art Gallery and Redland RSL Museum will be held between 21 and 24 August, 2014 .
There is something for everybody interested in the preservation of regional history and looking for an opportunity to network, communicate, have free and frank debate and gain practical skills and information; as well as explore the reasons and means for local museums to connect with their communities.
There will be thirty local, national and international speakers discussing a diverse range of exciting and relevant topics. Additionally, several informative and interesting events, including an important masterclass, have been included to support the ongoing work of museum professionals, volunteers, supporters and anybody interested in helping to maintain regional history.
Speakers and workshops will address a diversity of pathways for engaging and working with communities and identifying the role small museums play. Topics such as the obligations on museums to education and properly use museum space and resources through interpretative theatre, digitization, oral history, film and text, will be covered.

The Masterclass registration $75 Spirit of Place: Connecting Collections and Communities.
Thursday 21 August, at Redland Museum, 60 Smith Street, Cleveland Commencing at 9:30am.
The masterclass, conducted through the International Institute for the Inclusive Museum, focuses on sustainable development of small museums and their integration with local government planning. It includes an interactive workshop based on several Danish cases studies for co-creating 'Spirit of Place School Programs' with teachers.

Stradbroke Island Highlights Tour
Departs North Stradbroke Island Historical Museum, 15-17 Welsby St, Dunwich at 9:30am, Friday 22.
Learn about the Quandamooka people and experience the history and beautiful natural environment of one of the largest sand islands in the world. Lunch is at the Stradbroke Island Beach Hotel followed by a guided tour of the development of coastal houses from fishing shacks to copper-clad mansions with a prominent local architect.
You can depart the tour at Point Lookout or head back to Cleveland in time for the Conference Welcome and Exhibition Opening at the Redland Art Gallery at 6:00pm.

Moreton Bay Environmental Education Centre Boat Tour
Departs One Mile ferry terminal, Junner Street, Dunwich at 2:30pm, 24 August.
After the Conference return to Cleveland on the Moreton Bay Environmental Education Centre vessel, MV Inspiration and learn about the fascinating history of Peel Island and its Lazaret from the National Parks rangers.
