Forget Ghostbusters - Call Brisbane Ghost Tours
Old cemeteries are full of stories about our history. The headstone styles and the layout of the grounds can tell us something about funeral practices and the culture of years gone by. Inscriptions on headstones, and sometimes the lack thereof, tell us about diseases that swept through cities in colonial days and those who suffered accidental deaths or died of natural causes.
South Brisbane Cemetery (also known as Dutton Park Cemetery) is heritage listed and is located four kilometres from the CBD. It is located on 27 acres of land beside the Brisbane River. The first burial took place in 1870 and approximately 100,000 bodies have been buried on site.
You are issued with torches to assist on the walk around the grounds and the flying foxes that fly over during nightfall conjure up all those frightening images of ghosts we harboured as children.
Over the years, I have driven past the cemetery gates at the entrance on Annerley Road. On many occasions though it is not until you start the walk downhill towards the Brisbane River that you appreciate the size and creep factor of the site.
Our Tour Guide for the evening was suitably theatrical and full of true-life stories about grave diggers, sextons, and some of the more notorious buried on site. The cemetery's proximity to Boggo Road Goal means that forty-two prisoners hanged at that facility lay in the unconsecrated ground which provided more gruesome tales of murder and mayhem from our host.
