Eerie night out in Dutton Park

"Beware of eerie sounds and rustling in the dark" our tour guide Lily warns before we commence a night tour of South Brisbane Cemetery. But it is more spiders, snakes and bats that we will encounter as we tour the necropolis ... or maybe something or someone else that may put us in 'grave danger'.

More commonly known as Dutton Park and the River Cemetery, it is the second largest cemetery in Queensland dating back to 1870. The forty-six acre cemetery is promoted as 'one of Australia's most haunted sites'. The cemetery hides many tales from the awful and murderous death of infants to the unexplained or 'accidental' deaths, as our Brisbane Ghost Tours guide narrates.

Most harrowing are the thirty-nine men, two teenagers and one woman who rest in peace or not. These are the condemned souls who were hung at nearby Boggo Road Jail. Our guide recounts the story in graphic detail of Ernest Austin who was the last man hanged in Queensland. Many Boggo Road inmates were conscripted to dig graves, some for fellow prisoners and some for themselves.

Tales are told of tormented souls who roam the graveyard at night seeking peace that will never come. Some who were buried alive and their presence forever haunts the cemetery.

Our storyteller tells many stories with an eerie eloquence. Her dark gown in the gloomy light of the night adds to the spooky feeling standing within the cemetery. Couples grasp each other's hands tightly as we pick our way around the graveyards and memorials, torch in hand to watch every step ... and to check what lies beyond each tombstone and tree.
