South Bank in the midst of a Brisbane summer hardly seems like the place for a traditional Christmas market, but in Brisbane we create our own traditions. Christmas at South Bank has developed over a number of years into Brisbane's favourite place for free family Christmas activities and entertainment. This year you can once again enjoy the quintessential Brisbane
Christmas Markets at South Bank from Friday 11 December to Wednesday 23 December.
South Bank's version of traditional Christmas markets includes the cobblestoned streets of Stanley Street Plaza, market stall tents dressed in gingerbread house finery, trees and shop frontages bedecked with sparkling fairy lights, real Christmas trees filling the air with the scent of pine, and the whole area festooned with colourful Christmas displays and decorations.
There will be a Christmas Pantry for all your foodie and culinary Christmas supplies including plump, sweet Christmas puddings. A huge range of Christmas gifts for that special someone will be available in the festive Gifting Lane. Suppliers, artisans and craftspeople will be offering handmade wares such as wooden children's toys, hand-poured candles and jewellery. 'Tis also the season for fairytale gingerbread houses and handmade Christmas greeting cards.
Once you've carefully selected the perfect presents you'll be able to have your gifts hand-wrapped onsite for a gold coin donation to this year's Christmas Markets' charity partners, Youngcare and Hummingbird House.
Youngcare , which "works to provide choice in care and accommodation for the 7,000 young Australians currently living in aged care" will benefit from your donation from 11 to 16 December, while
Hummingbird House , providing "world-class respite and end of life care for life-limited children and their families", will be the recipient from 17 to 23 December. This is your opportunity to demonstrate the spirit of Christmas. As Scrooge's nephew, Fred, says in Dickens'
A Christmas Carol , "
I have always thought of Christmas time... as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely."
There will be plenty of Christmassy entertainment including carol singers, children's performers and musicians, and you can also enjoy South Bank's
Christmas Fireworks Spectacular nightly from 17 to 21 December.
The markets are on from 11am to 8pm daily, with extended hours from 17 to 21 December until 9pm.
