Settling in for some great country fun
Blessed with such a diverse and varied land, it comes as no surprise that South Australia is home to a diverse and varied population. And for one day of the year, that population comes out to play at the local Country Show.
During Autumn and Spring when the weather is milder and suits outdoor events, 47 of South Australia's townships and communities will be putting on their annual Country Show, each of them special in their own little and unique way.
From the traditional sideshow rides to the handicrafts to the agricultural displays to the eating halls and the fashion parades, these country shows have got something for everyone, with a smaller crowd and country hospitality at the forefront. And when you toss in a number of town or country specific agricultural or historical events, the fun lasts long into the evening.
Equestrian events also feature prominently at the Country Shows with many hosting formal events that offer qualifying points for competitors and the opportunity for competitors to progress to city based competitions or even head towards becoming a future Olympian.
2016 was a year of weather events and those events impacted a number of shows and cancelled a few others thus meaning some show organisers in 2017 will be looking to make up for lost fun by doubling the effort this year.
So why not take a day trip to the country and mix with the locals and enjoy one of these great country spectacles. Or, alternatively, an extended holiday in the country in and around one of these townships gives visitors a chance to enjoy even more of the great hospitality that county folk are renowned for.
Further details on all country shows can be obtained from the South Australian Country Shows website or from their facebook page. Alternatively the links above will provide direct access to each of the local show pages, which include updates on activities, shows, demonstrations and the weather.
