Besides
silos , water towers are also being painted around South Australia. I just love these large-scale works of art and here's a list of where to find them when you're on your next road trip.
1.
Snowtown
Approximately 150 kilometres north of Adelaide is a giant 360-degree technicolour mural. Renowned artist Vans the Omega undertook the Snowtown project with 120 litres of paint and 300 spray cans. The finished piece features the bright faces of four local volunteers and sports stars. Be sure to take a selfie with them.
2.
Kadina
In 2018, RESIO brought Kadina's bare elevated tank structure to life as part of the Fund My Idea grant. The young maypole girl holding copper and wheat signifies the region's Cornish heritage as well as its mining and farming history. The steam engine represents an integral railway line and the poppies commemorate our fallen soldiers.
3.
Port Vincent
Designed by Joel Van Moore and Elizabeth Close and painted by Camilo Delgado and Jasmine Crisp, this piece tells the past and present story of Port Vincent - a ketch, a yacht and two young fishermen. While visiting the town, you might just see children sitting on the wharf catching fish.
4.
Stansbury
The water tower at Stansbury has been transformed into a stunning mural by artists Mike Makatron and Conrad Bizjak. This work of art took a little under two weeks to complete. A mixture of spray gun and hand painting was used to bring the ideas and inspiration of the community to life.
5.
Edithburgh
This vibrant underwater scene would have to be one of my favourites. Mike Makatron and his team took on the task of painting the water tower through a Regional Tourism Bushfire Recovery Grant. To assist in the region's economic recovery, why not also stay the night at this picturesque seaside township of Edithburgh.
6.
Yorketown
The water tower mural, painted solo by artist Jasmine Crisp, represents Yorketown's surrounding landscape - bright yellow canola flowers, wheat crops and pink salt lakes. It also pays homage to the incredible work of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
7.
Coobowie
Although technically a water tank, I think this piece is still worth mentioning when we talk about water tower art. Creature Creature and Jason Parker have successfully focused their design on the fascinating array of birdlife in the Coobowie estuary. In addition, they have also painted the nearby shed.
Now, if you prefer not to venture too far from Adelaide, then feel free to check out the water tower at Belair and the water tank at Semaphore. These artworks might just entice you to take that daring journey to the regions one day.
