Everyday life and the difficulty of letting go. Sounds you are accustomed to and suddenly realising they are gone. The sound of the coffee dripping, the sound of that morning smoothie whirring in the blender, and the sound of your loved one. All distorted.

And so begins a free fall for Ruben, played brilliantly by Riz Ahmed. Ruben, whose passion is to play drums, while his loved one belts out some metal lyrics to them, is frustrated, desperate, and lost.

He looks for options and tries out a couple - the first one would mean he would have to accept his loss of hearing, and the second being getting cochlear implants.

Throughout trying to accept his deafness, he makes connections. He touches people's lives. They embrace him as part of their community.

While trying out cochlear implants, he wants to regain past connections, which would mean, he would have to abandon the new connections.

Riz Ahmed, you deserve an award for this performance. You are the film. The sound in the film is also handled in such a way that the audience also becomes 'deaf' with Ruben.

It is written and directed by Darius Marder, who also co-wrote The Place Beyond The Pines.

It made me think we have to appreciate those everyday sounds you can hear. We tend to take these for granted and want to shut them out - but imagine if we were in Ruben's place.

Excuse the pun, or maybe not, but a sound film.
