A beach holiday in winter? A bit silly, right?

Or perhaps not.

Sorrento , on the tip of the Mornington Peninsula, is a perfect destination all year round, whether you're in need of a holiday or just a day away.

So the obvious question - isn't the beach freezing in winter? Well, yes. Sorrento isn't a magical land where winter does not happen. It is cold. But the cold doesn't mean you can't have a good time.

First of all, layer up. Get those coats and warm jackets out of the cupboard and throw on a scarf. Don't forget your umbrella because it might rain a bit. Once you've got your warm clothes on, head for a stroll along the beach. The sand is wet and hard in winter so won't get in your shoes, which is always an advantage. The shoreline is pretty much deserted because every else is shying away from the cold, so make the most of it. Enjoy the spectacular ocean, brave a walk out on the pier, watch the sun attempting to break through the grey clouds.

If you're really afraid of the cold, then give the beach a miss - admire it from your car window if you like. There are plenty of shops open in Sorrento in winter and plenty of cafes to find a good hot chocolate in.

While wandering the lovely peaceful and quiet streets of Sorrento on a chilly afternoon, make sure you head into the toy shop, Geppetto's Workshop . Young or old, everyone will delight in these gorgeous handcrafted toys and puppets, ranging from cute little yo-yo's to adorable wooden horses and intricate doll's houses. This place is one of a kind - the challenge will be finding something you don't want to buy. You'll find this charming shop on 85g Ocean Beach Rd, Sorrento.

Next, if the rain is getting to you and you need something to warm up your belly, a visit to Buckley's Chance restaurant won't disappoint. Located on 174 Ocean Beach Road, Sorrento, the pancakes here are something special. There is something in a simple stack of pancakes that will leave an unforgettable taste in your mouth. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner from 8am-4pm on Monday to Friday, and 7.30am-5pm on the weekend, there are endless options for all appetites at all times of the day.

Finally, what is the best thing about a holiday to Sorrento in the cold months of winter? Let's just say, you won't have any issues booking some awesome accommodation for a lesser price than during the peak season. With many hotels, bed and breakfasts and hostels in Sorrento, they won't be turning away your reservation for a room during winter. You never know, you might even get a room upgrade for the same price. Just one of the many benefits of enjoying winter!

While in Sorrento, why not catch the ferry over to Queenscliff and check out the opposite side of the peninsula. Check out the timetable here , and for the 40 minutes ocean journey it'll cost you around $10 one. Cars cost around an extra $50 to take on the ferry, so why not leave the car at your accommodation and stroll around the quaint town of Queenscliff on foot.

A bonus with catching the ferry during winter - you might be lucky enough to spot a while in the cold ocean. You'll have to look closely though.

Haven't convinced you that a winter holiday is a good idea? It's up to you - the choice of being bored in front of the heater inside, or braving the elements and making the most of life all year around.
