Featured on TV frequently, Soo Kee's "Sang Har Meen" as locals call it in Cantonese or roughly translated as "Freshwater Prawn Noodles" is a must-try in the Bukit Bintang area of Kuala Lumpur (KL).

Located on 14 Medan Imbi, Soo Kee Mee Stall is a typical local non-air conditioned coffeeshop in KL with no modern aesthetics, moderately clean surrounds and limited smiles from the owners. For locals, its just another place to enjoy no frills tasty food without any service expectations.

For visitors, it provides an experience of a real local eating environment, packed with customers especially at dinner, waiting for their "Sang Har Meen". Its also the open kitchen where you can watch the cooks slave away behind fiery stoves and get a whiff of the food fragrances.

What makes the "Sang Har Meen" interesting is the use of the freshwater or river prawn (known as "Sang Har" in Cantonese) which has a huge head relative to its body, instead of the ocean prawns. The prawn head contributes majority of the flavour to the dish along with some fragrant ginger. The prawns are butterflied so its easy to pick up the succulent meat from the shell.

A single portion of "Sang Har Meen" with medium sized prawns at RM25 is not cheap but its largely due to the higher price of the river prawn. So if you're in the area, its good enough for a try but be there earlier around 5.30pm to get a table.

They are closed on Mondays.
