Talented actor, musician, comedian and improvised theatre practitioner, Alastair Tomkins, is bringing his critically acclaimed re-imagining of the great Terminator canon, Songs for Sarah Connor (A Love Story, Terminated!), to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2016 for a strictly limited season!This highly original and unique comedy-cabaret gives a voice to one of cinema's most beloved characters, the T-800, and explores his emotional journey and internal monologue through the songs of the Gershwin brothers, Patsy Cline and Creed! Songs for Sarah Connor is Tomkins' love letter to James Cameron's original sci-fi films; in Terminator (1984), the T-800 is sent to terminate Sarah Connor in 1984, to prevent the birth of her son, John, the future leader of the Human Resistance, and in Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991), the T-800 is reprogrammed by the future John Connor and sent back to 1995 to protect Sarah Connor and his younger self.This idea of a 'cybernetic organism' with a 'change of heart' inspired Tomkins to develop a series of short sketches, which saw the T-800 revealing his inner thoughts and feelings through song. Tomkins describes these early ideas as "humorous, but essentially a light-hearted disjointed riff on the subject matter." Over the years, Tomkins further developed the concept and focused on the more 'human' side of the T-800 android by weaving in the films' themes of paternity, relationship ideals and heroic sacrifice. Soon enough, Songs for Sarah Connor began to take on a life of its own.Tomkins chose to include a diverse range of existing classic and contemporary songs to support the epic love story between the T-800 and Sarah Connor. Tomkins notes "Once the show proper starts, the songs have a crucial role in generating multiple dimensions to the lead characters and their backstory, as well as their dreams for the future." The end result is Tomkins' "love ballad to the characters" of the T-800 and Sarah Connor as the narrative brings their relationship to the fore. Discover what could have been and tragically what was with Songs for Sarah Connor. Mixing comedy and pathos, the show is a left field love sonnet with a cabaret heart.
