I have collected for your listening pleasure five songs about sweaters. Why? Well, why not?
1. Sweater - Eskimo Joe
"My grandpa gave me a hand-me-down. When I put it on I looked like a clown. Kids would beat me up after school. It made me itch 'cause it was made of wool".
Eskimo Joe are an Aussie alternative rock band, who are currently supporting TISM on their Death To Art tour . They're probably best known for the 2006 hit Black Fingernails, Red Wine, but back in 1998 they released Sweater. It's very, very 90s, and got a lot of air play on Triple J.
The lyrics are pretty straightforward. There's no metaphor or mystery here. It's literally about a guy who owned an ugly sweater.
2. Cosby Sweater - The Hilltop Hoods
Warning: Explicit lyrics
Aussie hip-hop group The Hilltop Hoods formed in Adelaide in 1996. Cosby Sweater is a single from their seventh studio album, Walking Under Stars, released in 2014. It got the number 3 spot in Triple J's Hottest 100 that year.
The lyrics refer to bright colourful sweaters, like those worn by disgraced comedian Bill Cosby, and the similarly bright sweater worn by rapper Biggie Smalls. The reference to Cosby has aged like milk in the wake of the multiple sexual assault allegations about him that emerged later in 2014. However, if you can forget about Cosby himself, the song is still great fun to dance to.
3. Undone- The Sweater Song - Weezer
"If you want to destroy my sweater hold this thread as I walk away. Watch me unravel. I'll soon be naked. Lying on the floor I'll come undone".
American rock band, Weezer, released their first album, known as the 'Blue album' in 1994. Undone - The Sweater Song was also released as a single, with a video directed by Spike Jonze. The dialogue at the beginning and during the song is the bassist, Matt Sharp, and several friends of the band members. It was written by Rivers Cuomo, and Dave Grohl once joined the band to play it onstage during the Foozer (Weezer and the Foo Fighters) tour in 2005.
It's a quirky song, made stranger and funnier by the weird video. For me, it brings back memories of the 90s.
4. The Sweater - Meryn Cadell
"The sweater has that slightly goat-like smell that all teenage boys possess, and that smell will lovingly transfer to all your other clothes".
Speaking of quirky, The Sweater Song by Meryn Cadell is about the phenomenon of the Boyfriend Sweater (or jacket), where girls wear a sweater borrowed from a boy. I can definitely see the appeal of wearing an oversized sweater like that, as in my youth I wore my older brother's Iron Maiden shirt until I got fed up with random guys asking me to name three Iron Maiden songs, and this song cracked me up. It's from the album Angel Food For Thought from 1991.
5. Sweater Weather - The Neighbourhood
"It's too cold for you here and now, so let me hold both your hands in the holes of my sweater".
Or you could, you know, go inside or something. That's a flimsy excuse to snuggle if ever I heard one.
Sweater Weather was a hit for American rock band The Neighbourhood in 2012. It's not really my cup of tea, but apparently, a lot of people liked it.
