A reader request! Songs about listening ended up being a fun little topic to search for songs about. I assumed I’d have quite a few about music and the rest about communication issues, and I was pretty much spot on. Listening is just something that we all do, and it is important in many facets of life.

As such, I found some songs about listening that make what I think is a decent list. And so, here are Songs About Listening.

Regular rules apply: the words “Listen” or “Listening” (or variations thereof) must be in the title, one song per artist, one version of each song, and I need to like the song. Songs are presented chronologically, either when released as a single or when the home album they come from was released. These are not just charting singles, but songs from my collection that fulfill the requirement and that I like.

Here are twelve songs about Listening!

Listen To Me’ by Buddy Holly (1958)

Let’s go way back to the start of what we would call rock ’n ’ roll and one of the people who made the music what it is today. This is one of Buddy Holly’s slower tracks, but it is a good one, one of many that came to define his music.

See Me, Feel Me/ Listening To You’ by The Who (1969)

This is one of my favourite songs from The Who’s rock opera Tommy. In context, it is a sad song but with hope; as a song it lifts and rises to a glorious crescendo.

Listen To The Band’ by The Monkees (1969)

By 1969 The Monkees had gone from a manufactured band made for a TV series to a legitimate band in their own right, and songs like this helped with that process of making them come across as the “genuine article.”

Listen To The Music’ by The Doobie Brothers (1972)

The Doobie Brothers released a string of great songs throughout the 1970s, and this is one of their earlier ones and one that still crops up today. Just a joyous piece.

Listen To What The Man Said’ by Wings (1975)

I am not a huge fan of Wings and prefer McCartney’s solo work, but some of their songs are really good, and this is one of them. Gentle and with a message, it is still fondly remembered.

Who Listens To The Radio?’ by The Sports (1978)

The Sports were an Australian band that had some great songs and singles, and a band I wished I had seen live. This song is one that has become more and more relevant as the years have gone on.

Listening’ by Pseudo Echo (1984)

This was the first song that came to mind when this topic was first suggested. Pseudo Echo is considered a one-hit wonder in the rest of the world; in Australia, songs like this made their name.

Listen Like Thieves’ by INXS (1985)

The title track from the album broke INXS all over the world after finding great success in Australia and New Zealand. From here, it was all up for the band.

Listen To Your Heart’ by Roxette (1988)

Roxette had a long string of hits through the 1980s and 1990s, and this ballad was one of their more popular ones, hitting the upper echelons of charts around the world. And deservedly so.

Listen To The Waves’ by Ayreon (1995)

Ayreon is a progressive rock/ progressive metal band, and this song comes from their debut album, which is the only album I own. The music just struck me.

Nobody’s Listening’ by Linkin Park (2003)

Meteora was Linkin Park’s second album and the one I think is their best. Songs like this, showing the rap-rock nu-metal stylings that made the band are a reason why the album is still looked back on with affection.

Listen’ by Neil and Liam Finn (2018)

One of the best tracks from the father-son duo’s Light Sleeper album. This is a track with some wonderful harmonies and is a beautiful way to close off this list.

And there we have it – a dozen songs about listening, covering the decades from the 1950s to 2010s. A lot of interesting musical styles here, and something for most people. As such, I hope you found something on this list to enjoy.
