For no particular reason, I have collected fives songs that are about, or at least mention, pieces of furniture. They're the work of very different musicians, from different decades, and they are some bangers.

1. Chaise Longue - Wet Leg

"On the chaise longue, on the chaise longue, all day long on the chaise longue, on the chaise longue..."

Released in 2021 Chaise Longue was the debut single for the British Indie rock group, Wet Leg. I bet it forced a lot of people to look up the spelling of 'chaise longue'. Kudos for writing about such an old-school, classy piece of furniture, and for quoting from Mean Girls. It's a quirky, catchy song that is liable to get stuck in your head.

2. Couch Surfing - Darren Hanlon

"I've used up all my good will vouchers on every single friend with couches".

This one is not so much about couches as it is about couch surfing, or temporarily sleeping at other people's homes, which may or may not necessarily involve a couch. But hey, close enough. It was written and performed by Australian singer-singer Darren Hanlon, who, along with Eskimo Joe , recently supported TISM on their 2024 Death To Art tour. This song is upbeat sounding, despite the less-than-positive lyrics towards the end. It comes from Hanlon's 2006 album Fingertips and Mountaintops.

3. Table For Two - Milky Chance

"What a hell of a day
I've been trying to make it work
Nine to five I’m just here thinking of you
At the end of the day
I been lying to myself
Cause I’m waiting at a table for two"

Okay, this one is another song that's not literally about furniture, but rather about a romantic relationship. However, at least there is a table in the film clip. Milky Chance are a German band, best known for their 2013 hit Stolen Dance. Table for Two is a slightly sad song about unrequited love.

4. The Bed - from the musical Hair

"Oh, the bed is a thing
Of feather and spring
Of wire and wood
Invention so good"

This is song is from Hair: The American Tribal Rock Musical, which made its off-Broadway debut in 1967. The lyrics were written by Gerome Ragni, and it was performed by the ensemble cast. It does mention a literal bed, although it is really a song about resisting conservative values since, as they say, while you can do many things in bed "never can you sin in bed".

5. Shelf in the Room - Days of the New

The shelf in the room
Has been the way
Of holding me
And letting me stay

The shelf in this one seems to be symbolic of security or stability in the face of isolation and loneliness. At least, that's what it looks like in the video. The Shelf in the Room is by Indiana band Days of the New, and comes from their 2008 album Definitive Collection. It uses acoustic guitar and a whole lot of '90s angst.
