In my recent column about marriage and weddings , I mentioned I had a column about being together as an adjunct to go with it. Marriage is a way of being together, sure, but togetherness goes beyond something that formal.

This, then, is that column – songs about being together!

Like I just said, being together does not necessarily mean being married, or even being partnered with someone. It means doing something in unison. And that is the theme of all of the songs in this list (except one). The rules are simple: song must have the word "together" in the title, one song per artist, one version of each song, and I need to like the song. Normal rules.

Songs about being together!
'Happy Together' by The Turtles (1967)

The Turtles had a couple of hit singles and then faded from everything. This was one of those hit songs, a good track about, well, being happy together.
'Let's Spend The Night Together' by The Rolling Stones (1967)

One of the Stones' bigger hits from the 60s, this is a great track with a not subtle at all theme. So unsubtle, in fact, that when they performed on Ed Sullivan, they had to change the lyrics to 'Let's Spend Some Time Night Together'. And Jagger's facials singing that tell you everything you need to know.
'Come Together' by The Beatles (1969)

A song I think I have 10 cover versions of, this is The Beatles doing their blues rock thing. They tried everything and did all of it well, and this is an example of that.
'Join Together' by The Who (1972)

A non-album single that is a call to arms for their fans to go with the band. Perfect. In the 1990s it was used in a TV advertisement for the Commonwealth Games, and it worked superbly there as well.
'Let's Get Together Again' by The Glitter Band (1974)

The band without Gary, this is another call to arms for their fans to follow them, this time after some turmoil. But the song is the typical percussion and guitar heavy catchy tune the Glitter Band put out a lot in the 70s.
'Let's Stick Together' by Bryan Ferry (1976)

A reworking of an older track ('Let's Work Together'), with Ferry's smooth voice carrying it so well. He had not long left Roxy Music (though he did go back), and this proved to everyone he could do it alone.
'Sharing The Night Together' by Dr. Hook (1978)

Not one of my favourite Dr. Hook songs, but this is still a decent little track that is nice to listen to. I do have a friend whose former wife and him called this one of "their songs", so it certainly has positive vibes for many listeners.
'We Can Get Together' by Icehouse (1980)

Technically, the band was called Flowers and the album was Icehouse, but things have been changed over time. Nice bit of early Australian synth-pop here, though.
'Gotta Pull Myself Together' by The Nolans (1981)

I keep saying every list has a guilty pleasure song (which is not good – why should I feel guilty about liking a song?), and this would probably classify here. I was young when this came out and I always enjoyed it.
'Together In Electric Dreams' by Phil Oakey & Giorgio Moroder (1984)

From a film that it seems only I like , this song that played over the closing credits is a wonderful bit of 1980s electro-pop that still sounds great today.
'We Will Together' by Eurogliders (1985)

Absolutely is one of the best 1980s Australian albums, and yet it has been all but forgotten today. This is my favourite track from that album, a song that sounds like the two singers really will do things together.
'Doesn't Anybody Stay Together Anymore' by Phil Collins (1985)

No Jacket Required is one of those rare albums where every single song is a good one, and so that means this is a good track. The use of synths is done well, the drumming comes to the fore, and the question is one a lot of people ask even today.
'Stick Together' by Superjesus (2003)

Superjesus are one of those bands I have seen live a few times, one of the really good bands to come out of South Australia . Rock Music, the album this song comes from, is a really good piece of 2000s Australian rock.
'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together' by Taylor Swift (2012)

A bit of fun pop from Red that presents itself as light fluffy pop but is actually a depressingly angry track. She was young when she wrote this, and her writing would improve markedly, but this is still a good track. And, yes, I know it is the only track about not being together, but I think it's too good to leave out.
'Getting The Band Back Together' by Cold Chisel (2019)

This my favourite track from the Blood Moon album , and shows that not only do the band still have it but that they still have a lot to teach the current generation of Australian rock performers.
And there we have it – 15 songs about being together. I do have a lot more, but these 15 really stood out as the best of the lot, and after some long columns lately, I thought I'd scale things back a little for this one. A lot more from the 1970s than normal, but that is sometimes the nature of the beast.

Hope you enjoyed it.
