The Olympics are over for a few weeks. I didn't realise the Paralympics were going to be delayed for a while, so my watching of big-time sport has fallen by the wayside for a brief period.

Like so many others, I was living vicariously through the athletes . And now they've come home and are stuck in quarantine and we're stuck watching nothing, which means we can all revert to our unfortunately all-too-common default mode in these pandemic times – being lazy.

So, as is my wont, I decided to soundtrack a lazy day. Here are songs that are about or reliant on being lazy… or about complaining about someone being lazy. Usual rules – one song per artist, I need to like the song. So, sit down in the recliner with a drink of your choosing and just laze out.

Oh, and The Lazy Song by Bruno Mars is not here. That song annoys me no end. No, really, it does, and makes my aversion to whistling so very stark.
'Sunny Afternoon' by The Kinks (1966)

With a sound like something out of the 1920s, this track about "lazing on a sunny afternoon" is such a nice laid-back track that it is perfect to start a list about being lazy. The Kinks were such an interesting band, with music ranging from this style to proto-heavy metal to 'Lola'. But this is a really cool song from them.
'(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay' by Otis Redding (1968)

One of the all-time classic tracks, even with included whistling . And what could be a better way of lazing than sitting on the titular dock "just wasting time." Another laid-back song that just perfectly encapsulates doing nothing.
'Lazy Days' by The Byrds (1968)

From the Sweetheart Of The Rodeo album, this early country-rock album was filled with some wonderful tracks, and this one is one of the good ones. Up-tempo, with those glorious Byrds vocal harmonies and some nice multi-guitar work makes this a fine track.
'Lazy Sunday' by The Small Faces (1968)

A strange song that is difficult to categorise. Some strange instrumentation, the verses delivered almost sing-speaking, a chorus that feels yelled, and yet it all works together as a whole, maybe because its message of doing nothing on a Sunday still resonates to this day. And what was it with laziness in 1968?
'Lazy' by Deep Purple (1972)

From the classic Machine Head album, this track starts off slow with that magnificent organ before picking up to become a guitar jam. The music does not really feel lazy, but the track is one of so many really strong ones on that album.
'Get Out Your Lazy Bed' by Matt Bianco (1984)

The first of our anti-laziness songs here, but I just like the jauntiness that Matt Bianco brings, as his few singles that I heard back in the 80s showed was his way of presenting music. One of those songs that make you nod along and smile as he sings.
'Lazyitis' by The Happy Mondays (1988)

Standard late 80s pop, equating being lazy with a disease, but The Happy Mondays had that jangling guitar and a singer with a distinctive voice that made them stand out from the rest of the pack. Again, maybe a little too uplifting for a song about being lazy, but it doesn't matter when it sounds this good.
'Why Don't You Get A Job?' by The Offspring (1998)

The second of our anti-lazy songs, and a song that I like yet which seems to be quite polarising. There are very few people on the middle ground with this track – people either love it or hate it. Well, I like the way the complaints about the people who are being lazy are delivered and the music suits the angry tone.
'Lazy Bones' by Green Day (2012)

To my mind, one of the highlights from the derided DOS! album, this track is like a toned down version of the Green Day of the mid-1990s, but that suits the song and its lyrics. The album is not the best, and maybe that's why this song stands out, but it does and I like it.
'Nothing In Particular' by The Lacs (2014)

One of those country-rap hybrid songs that seemed to appear in the twenty-first century out of nowhere (culminating in 'Old Town Road' by Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus), but this one is about having a lazy day and wanting to share it with a friend. And what better way to finish off this list than sharing doing nothing with someone close?
So, there we are, ten songs about laziness in all its manifest forms. An eclectic soundtrack for that afternoon when you don't want to do anything, building up the energy to live vicariously through the Paralympians and their amazing feats.

So, sit back, do nothing and I hope you enjoy this list.
