In Thai culture, Songkran is the New Year Festival. The word Songkran is derived from a Sanskrit word and literally means astrological passage, relating to transformation and change.
The Thai New Year's Day and therefore the Songkran Festival is held each year on 13 April and coincides with the rising of Aries on the astrological chart. In Thailand, a series of symbolic traditions are observed. These include the offering of food to Buddhist monks, and the pouring of water on Buddhist statues, the young and elderly to represent purification and the washing away of sins and bad luck.
For the very first time this year, the
Songkran Festival will be brought to Adelaide and everyone is invited to join in the celebration. To be held at Wigley Reserve, Anzac Highway, Glenelg North, the festival will commence at 9.30 am on Saturday 7 April 2018 with the pouring of water on the hands of revered elders and asking for blessings as water is sprinkled onto Buddha images for good luck.
The Festival is observed as a symbol of hospitality and love and the importance of strong relationships within family, communities and society as a whole; showing respect to family elders and receiving blessings.
From 1 pm, the Songkran Parade and celebration will begin. There will be Thai Boxing Demonstrations by Young Lions Muay Thai Kickboxing, Thai dancing from SILP Productions along with dancing by multicultural communities such as Laos, Cambodia, India and more.
Live music will be provided for entertainment or join in the Thai cooking, art and craft demonstrations. There will be food stalls with authentic Thai cuisine and Singha beer available to purchase.
Come along, enjoy the celebration and immerse yourself in this very beautiful culture. Entry is free.
