'Dessert' the diet for this Sunnybank wonder
A little way further than the busy shopping centres in central Sunnybank, there's a wonderful dessert cafe that is 100% worth the extra drive.
Sonder Dessert can be found on the corner on Beenleigh Rd and Farne St. It's the perfect place to finish off any meal in Sunnybank with a drink or a sneaky dessert. On second thoughts, maybe you'd better head to Sonder first, because trust me - you're going to want to try a lot on this menu.
My first time to Sonder, I was immediately taken by the idea of a creme brûlée. My intention to order one disappeared completely, however, when I stepped up to the counter and spied the array of ice-cream flavours on display. Now me, I'm not a huge ice-cream fan. I like it, but, on a normal occasion, I wouldn't choose ice-cream over another dessert. But the ice-cream flavours at Sonder deserved to be tried. The cheerful cafe owner was also very enthusiastic about his ice-creams. It's hard to resist. Black sesame, Sticky Rice and Matcha (among many others) have all been pretty much perfected. Best of all, you can try as many as four different flavours in a flute of four mini waffle cones.
Obviously, I had absolutely no regrets about my dessert choice. Nonetheless, after consuming my four mini ice-cream cones, I noticed a woman get served the creme brûlée. It comes in a mini pot, with a tiny ice cream on the side. Adorable.
Naturally, the very next time we visited Sunnybank, that creme brûlée was on my plate. And while I'd like to think that it was purely the taste of the dessert that made me love this choice - I regret to say my enjoyment was probably 70% thanks to the pot. What can I say, I'm a sucker for a gimmick.
If you've made the critical error of filling up too much on your main meal in Sunnybank (which, let's be honest, is quite understandable), Sonder has a great drink selection too. I personally have always focused on the desserts, but my partner has opted for a drink each time. He confirms they're an excellent alternative - although the matcha flavours take some getting used to.
In short, I can't recommend Sonder Dessert enough. It's a fantastic little cafe, light and airy, and perfectly set up for a sit and taste of something sweet. The owner is so cheerful and obviously passionate about his food and his ice-cream, it makes you feel compelled to try everything he has on his menu. And even if you do, I can almost guarantee you won't regret it.
