Son in Law is a new Thai restaurant located at 56 Johnston St, Collingwood. It prides itself on being 'a fun, casual modern take on Thai food'.
'Son in Law' may sound like an unusual name for a restaurant, but the name is steeped in Thai culture. Son-in-Law eggs are a Thai street food favourite - fried hard boiled eggs in a tamarind sauce. But why are they called Son-in-Law eggs? My research suggests that it relates to the fact that the Thai word for 'egg' is the same as the word for... how shall we put it?... the part of male genitalia that comes in pairs! If a mother feels her son-in-law is not treating her daughter as he should, she will cook and serve Son-in-Law eggs to him. So, it serves as a warning to him to improve his behaviour or risk losing that important part of his anatomy.

Happily, you can enjoy Son in Law eggs and many other Thai dishes at this restaurant, without any implied threat. Thai owners Tony and Oh Rungpradit ensure the food on offer is authentic. Tony's friendly manner in the front of house role helps diners to quickly feel comfortable in this homely yet vibrant venue.

Other items on the menu include 'small plate dishes': roast duck bao ($6 each), minced pork and prawn rice paper ($8) and deep fried chicken ribs ($12); and 'bigger' dishes: twice cooked pork belly ($16) and steamed barramundi fillet ($18).

The menu also features some 'fusion' dishes. We tried and enjoyed the Thai fish patty sliders ($9.50).

We also tried the steamed coconut pandan pudding ($9), which was delicious; frankly I would return just for the dessert if nothing else!

Overall, the prices are very reasonable, with the most expensive dish on the menu priced at $18.

Son in Law is fully licensed, offering a good range of beers, wines and cocktails. It also offers a takeaway menu.

Son in Law is located almost directly opposite the Melba Spiegeltent in Johnston Street, convenient for a meal before or after a show.

The restaurant is open Tuesday to Friday: 5.30pm–11.30pm, and Saturday to Sunday: 11.30am–11.30pm (closed Mondays). Bookings are welcome for groups of 6 or more - phone (03) 9410 0399.
