Something on Saturday is a very special festival for children, held every weekend over the colder months. It has been running for eons. I used to take my daughter to the event at the Festival Theatre complex back in the 1980s. It was billed back in those days as an alternative to football, which was a great idea, and certainly a good weekend activity for us as we have never been to a footy game in our lives.





These days the program is a little different. Usually the days events are in two parts. The first is a performing arts presentation, which you have to buy tickets for. You can usually buy them on the day, but there may be tears all round if you get there and miss out, so perhaps best to purchase online or through BASS. Prices are under $15 but there are discounts if you purchase a bundle of tickets to be used over the season.

The presentations are specially tailored for children audiences and performed by top local and visiting performers. They are all good quality shows. This years line up will surely delight, and there is a good variety. Some young local talented kids from Essential Talent will put on a great show. There is also the ever popular Peter Coombe, some magic, and a sweet little show with teddy bears. The program even includes Shakespeare for kids. The second part includes a free crafts session along the lines of the theme of the days theatre presentation. This is usually held at the foyer area of the Space Theatre, but may be also in another location within the complex. These are craft sessions or some sort of hands on activity where children can move about and create something to take home. It is not a requirement to have purchased a ticket to the show to participate. Anyone can come along to the free sessions, but they do get very crowded when the theatre is over. The free sessions run between 11.30 am and 1pm, so kids can either attend before or after a show. Allow some time on either side to do the craft session.

The shows are billed at the 2 to 10 year age group, but I find this experience with all the kids running about is more suited to the over 5 year olds. Take a look at the program and read the description to see if it is suitable for your child, and you will find something suitable for all. After all it is a family event. Something on Saturday is an Adelaide tradition, and sure to be a success again this winter.
